I don't think I've witnessed a violent crime, but did get to watch grand theft and attempted arson in action.
One night my dog started growling at the window. Something he does often when a animal or something passes by, but this one sounded a lot meaner. It was ~1 AM and I was at the computer playing some Rome:Total War. I got up and walked over to the window just in time to see two guys break the window out of the neighbor's Javelin across the road. At the time, I had a '98 Dodge Avenger that was still fairly new parked across the street. I was worried that would be hit next. So I grabbed the phone and snuck out to the porch to watch. I called 911 and was giving them a play by play while the guys ripped the stereo out of the neighbors car.
Just when it seemed like they were done, I heard one of them say "lets burn it". The other then walked around the car with some sort of metal flask, pouring it on the car. I told the police they better hurry up because they were about to light it on fire. As the two guys tried and tried to light whatever they had poured on the car, I saw the police coming coming down the street from both sides with their lights off. The pair of burglars saw it about the same time. They hopped in their car and floored it, only to find another police car blocking the street already. They tried to turn around but couldn't, and smashed head on into a retaining wall.
So their epic get away got them a block down the road before they totaled their ride. Then, the police came to get a statement from me. As I walked over to the scene with them pointing out where they were and what they were doing, we saw the metal flask they were using to douse the car with. Turns out it was brake fluid. Not particularly flammable. Was out there long enough to hear that the car the guys were in was stolen from an ex-girlfriend of one of the guys, and they were both legally drunk.
So, those guys had a hell of a night. Grand theft auto, breaking and entering, property damage, DUI, fleeing, and attempted arson. Not bad for 30 minutes.
