If you want to work on the amount of gun crime in the US, you need to divert police resources away from busting Jimmy the marijuana dealer or Leslie the street hooker and run more sting operations on the streets targeting those who sell firearms.

Police work is like everything else - opportunity cost. There are far better things for police to be doing than busting someone for going 62mph in a 55mph zone, selling an ounce of weed, or selling their body to some lonely old man.

A crime is a crime.

Great idea. Armed Guards. With proper training. That'll totally prevent one of them going crazy and shooting the school up.

Listen to what you're saying to yourselves. A man with a gun protecting 4 year old boys and girls. Something wrong maybe? America, why do you think this doesn't happen in other countries? You get one major shooting a month nowadays. Your solution to gun crime is more guns. Can't you see the flaw?

Listen to what you're saying? Because people have the capacity to commit atrocities means that every person will commit atrocities? Quite the slippery slope you have there.

No, but if you give them the weapons necessary it's gonna make it a hell of a lot more likely!

Shooter is reportedly the father of a student at the school.

If thats true, thats probably why he was able to get in so easily.

Absolutely disgusting. Why do these cowards shoot themselves? Stay alive and take your punishment

That's horrible. What motivation could he have had that he killed children? Did they not invite his kid to a birthday party?

Schools need more security. Bottom line.
But that costs money, and nobody is willing to spend more money on education.

Perhaps this will change things. I don't recall a shooting like this in recent years, where this many children were killed. Things are going to change because of what happened today.
I honestly doubt it. I have zero faith that anything will be done to prevent these incidents.

You're probably right. But there's needs to be something. Whether it's additional manpower for security, whether it's special doors to lockdown a room, something. Something that allows people within the school to defend themselves that isn't a weapon.

Are you seriously saying the availabilty guns cause crime? Because, no, they don't.

Wow. This thread is kinda sad. 25+ people were just murdered and we're back discussing politics within the hour.
What else are they going to discuss? How we knew little timmy and lisa and how they can't get their presents from santa this year?

Umm...

Maybe the actual news? The events that are still being updated. The shock and grief most people would feel the need to let out after such an event? Jesus christ, there's a time and a place, and I believe the political discussion should be a separate one altogether, although that's not my decision.

It's always bothered me how there is no security at places like schools or libraries or movie theaters or whatever. It's one thing to avoid living in fear, but it's another to leave yourself vulnerable.

A good rule of thumb is to always expect the worse. The first people to die are the careless, and all these tragedies in the last dozen years are just showing how careless humans are.
Or you could just arm yourself, instead of relying on the police for everything.

Stfu. Its cool that you don't believe in that, but don't be a -blam!- about it.

How immature can you possibly be?

As an atheist, I agree. That was uncalled for, especially now, when a tragedy like this should bring us closer.

And even if he was a stranger, there are rarely any serious precautions in the lobby in regards to visitors. Most schools usually have you sign in and wear a nametag, and some wont let you go further without verifying your student. But any potential shooter regardless of their relation could dispose of the people in the lobby or office before they can sound any alarm.

Doors in the back should always be locked, and outdoor activities should always be well communicated among the staff with the necessary precautions taking place. What's stopping a shooter from jumping onto the campus while the kids are on the playground?

If somebody wants to go to a school and kill a bunch of kids, there are alternatives to guns such as knives, crossbows, poison gas, etc.

There is no perfect counter to any scenario, but having at least a few select individuals be tasked with security would be better than leaving it open.

It's always bothered me how there is no security at places like schools or libraries or movie theaters or whatever. It's one thing to avoid living in fear, but it's another to leave yourself vulnerable.

I like being able to live relatively safe here in the UK. After the Batman shootings, sure, I felt scared. I watched TDKR that night, and other people around me were kind of scared. Putting an armed guard there wouldn't make me feel that much safer. What if the armed guard went crazy?

I'd bet my lifes salary that the guns he had were obtained illegally. The dude also had a bullet proof vest on.

Hear they have a man in custody. So perhaps it wasn't a solo act?

If so, I propose to tie the person to a wooden log and leave him in the middle of the Death Valley. Let nature teach him/her justice.

Wait, there was a second shooter???

A guy in camouflage in the woods? It was a coordinated attack?

I am really confused by this. Who shoots an elementary school?
