Should you be charged on the basis of your weight on aeroplanes? It would be logical to charge passengers per kilogram of mass as the quantity of fuel required by the plane is directly proportional to the total weight of the plane - if you represent a greater strain in terms of fuel, you should pay a higher fee than people who consume a lower quantity of fuel, no?

Due to the limited availability of seats on an airplane, there should be a fixed base price, with modifiers added on depending on your weight.

Edit: The modifiers wouldn't be an arbitarily chosen amount - it would be roughly equal to the price of the additional fuel required to compensate for the additional weight of the person.

But the thing is, our prices wouldn't go down, like you would want, they would stay the same and fat peoples prices would go up. They would just make more money.

I'd be alright with an airline adopting that model.

Really, I don't fly coach anymore with the plebeians so I don't have to worry about a man's fat overhanging into my personal space, so I don't care too much.

If they have to take up two seats yes.

But otherwise no, it's not like they're going to bring down the plane.

No, not based on your logic. If that was the case then you would have to reward those who are underweight, not to mention the whole idea simply boils down to discrimination. Now what I do believe is that if you are too large to be accomodated by a single seat you should have to pay for a second.

What about body builders who are technically obese because of the BMI? THINK OF THE BODY BUILDERS!

I'm not sure if you were being serious, but this is a good point. Not to mention people that simply fall outside of the general BMI ratings. Some people are simply larger than others, broader, more heavily muscled, fat isn't the only determining factor in weight and dimension.

Logically, you can ask yourself why a 120 pound person should pay $800 for a ticket and then pay an extra $100 to check 80 pounds in baggage, but a 300 pound person can simply pay $800 for the ticket?

Most all of your ticket price that isn't eaten up by government taxes goes towards the cost of jet fuel - which is directly impacted by the weight of the plane.

Yes.

2 reasons:

Space and Weight.

The airlines charge per seat, anyone who takes up more room than they need to should be charged for the lost fare. They also have to take into account fuel. The more a plane weighs, the more fuel they use to keep it flying. If a person causes them to burn more fuel, they should charge just that person more in fare. Otherwise, they have to raise the prices for everyone, and I am done paying more for those people who can't stop stuffing their fat faces with double bacon cheeseburgers.

This is an excellent idea! You pay for the extra weight of luggage so why not?

This.

And also, the mere idea of that logic is just ridiculous. If that ever happened, it would be viewed as a Government solution to obesity and America (assuming you're plan is aimed at America) would be even more of a laughingstock.

Glossing over the whole point made earlier that fat people aren't the only ones that are considered overweight. The space concern is completely valid, as mentioned a few times already, if they need/require more than one seat they should pay for it. Charging by the pound is a very slippery slope, and there is no reason to believe that this will positively impact general ticket pricing, it will just cause heavier people to pay more.

As also pointed out above, people ARE charged according to their weight. Luggage.

The airlines worked out an average weight for everyone, and have worked that into their fare. If you bring over 50 pounds of luggage, you pay more. Why? Increased fuel costs. Now, if an obese man has 50 pounds over the allotted weight, why shouldn't he also be charged?

Luggage isn't their weight though. A small nitpick, but it does affect consumer perception.

There is a reason they started charging for luggage. An airline is a business, "heavy people pay more" is a near suicidal business decision.
