Halo 3's checkpoint system is barely an improvement from Halo 2. Halo 3 brought back cps obtained from killing Hunters (Hunter kill checkpoints) as well as visiting spots for reoccurring cps (timed checkpoints), both of which were in CE. But the cps still last only 8 seconds (5 jumps delay) just like in Halo 2. Reach has the second best checkpoint system IMO, simply because there are many timed checkpoints.
But... that's my only main gripe with this game.
It has some of the best tactical jumps.
It has some of the insanest level skips.
It has some of the best friendly AI management (they actually stay by the Hog if you leave it's driver seat parked against a wall instead of running off on foot at enemy vehicles. You can use deployable covers to block them. You can control the assistance you receive from your invincible allies).
It has some of the best AI engagements (even on Easy).
It's an AI collector's paradise, only hindered by aforementioned checkpoint system and a few annoying implementations (enemies being killed off on the spot, a Pelican that indiscriminately bombards a bridge with rockets).
Doing Mythic is 99.9% test of skill compared to the other games where you're often presented with way too many enemies to engage so you have to memorize and avoid when possible. Many novel strategies were spawned in this age of gaming.
My grade: A
