In the past, kids would bring guns to school (maybe high school) all the time and store them in their lockers so they could go hunting after class. School shootings never happened.

Honestly, it is the change in the people as a whole that is dangerous, not the guns.

I feel bad for those children, but if this tragedy fuels more gun restrictions my sympathies will be gone in a heartbeat.

You can't stop shootings, they've been going on for years and years and years. All you can do is minimize it, the problem will never completely go away.

Yeah, but most peoples definition of "change" is ban guns all together.

Posted by: lightlamp2
And that counts as changing something. I just want something to be done about this.
That is not what i want. Just some action to prevent this again

We all want action. But towards what? People are the problem.

I think we can all agree that something needs to be changed. The current status and laws are not good enough and this will keep happening. Action needs to be taken ASAP

Yeah, no.

Guns didn't cause this problem, we as a culture did.

How 'bout no? It's a basic Constitutional right for Americans to have guns. I'm not going to bother going into details since I don't feel like being banned for discussion of Politics.

I never question the wisdom of the 1700s either. Just last week I burnt a witch. Got a little sick from the fumes so I ate a chunk of radium and stuck some leeches on my face.
so you think the founders only had muskets and kentucky long rifles, right? they had an automatic rifle.

Something needs to be done, you are correct. Its gotta be cultural. I'm watching CNN, and Dr Drew just hit the nail on the head. The problem isn't guns, its us. All of us.

Think about it, what kind of a society creates people that do this regularly? How many school shootings is this now?

Yes, removing guns would lower body counts in these incidents. But they won't reduce the number of incidents. We would have to then ban knives, eventually tape oven mitts to everyone's hands to keep us from harming one another.

We need to look to how to reduce the number of incidents that happen.

Stricter laws would help I think. Misdemeanors such as drug possession and assault I feel like would take weapons out of the hands of many unstable people.

That said I know how easy it is to pick up an illegal weapon. If I wanted to, I could have a stolen/unregistered handgun by tonight. Hell, I could get an automatic by the end of next week.

Lets Boogie

Banning guns or putting heavy restrictions on them, will not prevent this from happening. It's not guns that is the problem but evil itself.

There will always be evil men who want to do evil things, and even if guns are banned, evil men can still find a way to obtain them to commit horrific acts.

It is better for good people to be able to have access to guns, so that they can defend themselves and people they care about from evil men.

You missed my point entirely.

I am saying that guns make these incidents more terrible, yes, but the US has become a culture where these events have become commonplace. We could tape oven mitts to our hands, and terrible thing would still happen.

While I am not a 2nd Amendment supporter, I realize that guns are not the problem here. The society that creates these killers is.

Yes, but it forces firearms into a black market which drives the prices up significantly. Not any idiot can just go and buy a gun.

Never say you're bored. Never say you're satisfied with the world. Never stop doubting or questioning things. Always wonder. Always think. But always take time to drop your guard, you don't have to be smart all the time.

It would be better to assess a gun owner's psychological state instead of just taking away the right to bear arms.

Culture sure as hell didn't stop it. We glorify violence in numerous facets, from TV, to music, to cinema.

That's still not the end-all reason why things like this happen. Some people are crazy, others just criminals. They developed a mindset based on their upbringing and surrounding influences that allow them to harbor such deeds in their minds and eventually carry them out IRL.

The world is a messed up place, and -blam!- happens. All we can do is try to minimize the evil within it, as it will never 100% vanish. Blaming inanimate objects as the cause for tragedies like this is -blam!- stupid.

You want to try to stop such things from happening? Fix the human that keeps pulling the trigger.

I agree. Its not the guns, its the Place we live in. Something is deeply wrong with the US. It goes much deeper than the economic/government problems.

You're right, society that creates the killers is the biggest problem. But guns are a part of the problem, and restricting them is something we can do rather easily.

I must say though, even if guns were banned, tragedies such as the one that happened today or in aurora would still have happened. Those people were determined, and it seems they would have found a weapon, regardless of the laws.

Shootings like the one in oregon though, may have been prevented.

Sure, but would we lock the guns away and then pat each other on the back and say mission accomplished?

We need to fix the real problem. Its not people with guns, its KILLERS with guns. In the US we produce more killers than any developed nation.

Like I said, I don't really support the 2nd Amendment, but I see clearly that guns aren't the problem here, and we need to fix what's really wrong.

True, however if someone wants a gun - they can get it regardless. If they want it that bad, of course they will do whatever it is to do that.

In the sense of that. I live in a very nice town. Nice houses.

A gun shop just opened up down my street. Uggggh. I'm not a fan of it.
