I've said repeatedly that I know I am a part of the problem too.

Trust me, I bear my bit of this. I am as guilty as any of you.

How about instead of actually saying it is everyone's fault you come up with some solutions?

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Brighten your day with science.

You can't fix an intolerant society unless you get rid if the bigoted.

I don't understand why you keep trying to say it's 300 million peoples fault. Can we fix this if we all work together? Yes. Does that mean we're all equally responsible for the sociopaths that develop in our society, probably not.

The development of sociopaths is both a genetic thing and environmental. You want to fix things? Go to poverty stricken areas and start there.

How many of the people who perpetrated a mass shooting was from a poor area?

And why are there so many more incidents now, and not a few decades ago?

I am talking about these random events. Did people do terrible things to Japanese in California during the late 30's? Sure. And Blacks in the South from the 1700's to the 1960's (arguably to today) and every crime against Native Americans or Mexicans.

Yes, these things happened. But there was a motive. It wasn't a random act.

This is one of a newer type of crime. These random acts that are designed to create fear.

If every person is said to be the angsty loner, then why not start getting rid of loners by making them friends?

We don't do this because we don't meet people anymore.

We've created a machine that keeps us in our booth, our car, our home, our room. If we limit human interaction, we create more loners.

OP do you have proof that everyone that commits mass murders in some form or another is a loner? Even better what proof do you have that serial killers are a new thing because that is what these people are?

Come on, these child sex offenders are a minority so it's okay.

Have you been paying attention to current events?

How many mass shootings have happened this year alone? How many last year, and the year before?

I'm not going to produce "proof" for you if you haven't been following events that we've all been talking about.

You tell us, how many? Since you're paying so much attention and making these assertions.

And today.

December 11, 2012. On Tuesday, 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts killed 2 people and himself with a stolen rifle in Clackamas Town Center, Oregon. His motive is unknown.

September 27, 2012. Five were shot to death by 36-year-old Andrew Engeldinger at Accent Signage Systems in Minneapolis, MN. Three others were wounded. Engeldinger went on a rampage after losing his job, ultimately killing himself.

August 5, 2012. Six Sikh temple members were killed when 40-year-old US Army veteran Wade Michael Page opened fire in a gurdara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Four others were injured, and Page killed himself.

July 20, 2012. During the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO, 24-year-old James Holmes killed 12 people and wounded 58. Holmes was arrested outside the theater.

May 29, 2012. Ian Stawicki opened fire on Cafe Racer Espresso in Seattle, WA, killing 5 and himself after a citywide manhunt.

April 6, 2012. Jake England, 19, and Alvin Watts, 32, shot 5 black men in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in racially motivated shooting spree. Three died.

April 2, 2012. A former student, 43-year-old One L. Goh killed 7 people at Oikos University, a Korean Christian college in Oakland, CA. The shooting was the sixth-deadliest school massacre in the US and the deadliest attack on a school since the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.

So you are basing this off a few more shooting a year? Is that all you have because if that is your proof it is very shallow. As I have already stated serial killers are nothing new. They can choose different methods to go about doing their killings. If you are saying that we make serial killers because we force them to be loners I want some form of proof. Since there are tons of cases where someone was a killer and the people that knew him said they could never imagine him doing it. Simply put OP outward appearances and how someone grows up really doesn't affect whether a person is going to commit murder or not. You can act like it does by picking on people you deem to be weird if it makes you feel like a better person, but don't blame everyone for not following what you view as right and wrong. Even you method of saying it is for the most part mainly due to loners and people that help develop loners sickens me. People are different if you want to act like there is a norm that everyone must adhere to then you need to grow up which is sad considering your age.

  • 12.14.2012 3:33 PM PDT

Wow, just wow!

Amen, OP, Amen. Our country is devolving into violence and hate and selfish ambition. It'd probably be best for all humankind if the world did end on Dec 21st.

Can I have a list of how many happened last year and the year before or even better the last 10 years since you are saying this is a growing trend? Even though for all you know it could just be more publicly available information compared to the past.

I mean this.

You can argue gun control, but that doesn't address the true and real problem. Incidents like today's would happen with or without guns. Sure, the body count would be lower, but an incident would have still happened.

We have become a cold and uncaring people. We do our best to avoid contact, and look to take no responsibility for our own actions. We feel entitled to things we do not earn, and get angry and resentful when we don't get what we want.

Now, we want a fix. A cute thing we can put on a bumper sticker, a cop out like a shirt or rubber bracelet.

Be good to one another. Strike up a conversation with a stranger and make a connection. Let's end this path we are on. Yeah, its awkward, but by fixing what's really wrong will we prevent tragedies like today.

I usually find myself in disagreement with you OP, but I agree 100% with you here.

Look for yourself

The trend is a loner who kills himself right after the act. Very few are caught.

Those are the ones that made the news because they play on your emotions.

Do you try and dig up other stories that don't make the major networks or the TV time of your local news outlet? How many gun murders do you follow that don't make the news? The ones in inner cities or dirt poor rural areas?

The difference in this type of crime is what happened. I'm not talking about violent crime. Violent crime does happen everywhere. I am talking about the type of mass shooting that happened today.

That list really doesn't prove much other than 2012 is an off year in terms of the number of shootings. If we look at 2010 for example it is less than 1999 while 2012 is more than 1999. Though on average it is about 2-3 per year which doesn't show an increasing trend at least not at this time maybe in a few years, but it is too soon to tell. As for the loner thing killing yourself after killing a bunch of people doesn't make you a loner. Hell people kill themselves all the time to avoid going to jail after doing something like a robbery. I need more proof than that if you are saying they are a loner.

How are today's mass shootings different from those years ago? Looking at the list that you linked they aren't other than the location which really doesn't say much.

It's not the gun, it's the person/people wielding the gun that does the wrong, the gun is only a factor.

This has been and will continue to be argued until the end of time, when humans can have weapons implanted in them.

We are creating sicko's whom lack back-ground checkings and such, that allows them to handle weapons like this displays. No matter the case, the criminals will always get the guns, even if there are bands, laws, and death-penalties against having them.
