More awesome than a shark high-fiving a bear during an explosion...IN SPACE.

This happens all over the world, not just America. Don't go blaming a country or an entire species just because of what some psychos do. No matter what, there's gonna be people who are just not right in the head and will do some crazy stuff, you just have to remember, those people are just a few out of 7 billion humans.

And don't go around saying this stuff hasn't been happening before, this kind of stuff has happened for a very long time, it's just that with the massive amount of media coverage today, this stuff hardly ever goes unnoticed anymore. For example, the sudden deaths of whole schools of fish or flocks of birds. Some people thought it was a sign of the apocalypse since this wasn't seen before, but that's just because nobody noticed it before because the media didn't see it.

In short, one bad egg doesn't make the entire country, or especially the entire human race bad.

You can argue gun control, but that doesn't address the true and real problem. Incidents like today's would happen with or without guns. Sure, the body count would be lower, but an incident would have still happened.
Is this not preferable?

I live in Australia. According to Wikipedia there have only been two recorded shootings at schools here (which were both Universities).

The idea that gun control is the only method is dangerous. At least to the rights that US citizens have become accustomed.

But, that isn't exactly what I've been going on about. Its the incidents I am concerned with. For whatever reason, people have been snapping with a much greater frequency than in the past. Sure, a bad economy has some to do with it, but the trend started under a great economy.

What happened to us here in the States? From everything I've looked at, the type of person who does this sort of crime is the alienated loner.

Well, we can fix that. I don't know why I am being pushed back on so hard, as I am not saying to take anything away. I'm not saying to limit the 2nd Amendment. I'm not saying to jail anyone, or put everyone through a psychological screening to find these psychos before they strike. No, I am saying for everyone to take a minute and make a human connection, so there is less alienation, and less loners.

That simple.

I'm not sure this would really fix the problem, Charlie, but I don't think it would hurt if humans as a whole were just a little more courteous to each other. Everyone has their breaking point, and being miserable doesn't help. Sometimes, it's just a friendly gesture from a stranger that lets a person know there are good people in the world, and it's calming.

I think people are very impersonal nowadays and act without consequence. Whether it's the employer who suddenly and coldly fires someone in financial distress, or a person who feels they've been backed into a corner and no one cares for them, we as a race need to be aware of these possibilities and act carefully and respectfully toward others. Being rash and heartless never did anyone any favors. Being kind and considerate has.

We and the rest of the world definitely have a lot to work on.

The whole of the internet today has made me terrified off the future of America. Every single forum i've looked at today (around 10 of them) are basically in the same state: arguing about what was the real cause of what happened to day. All of these kids, ages probably ranging from 15-25, spewing all sorts of horrible words and such things at each other. The US doesn't have a future when this generation takes seats of power in our government. It doesn't matter how you look it at it, humanity will fall, and today's generation very well may be the beginning of it.

Humans are violent pathetic creatures who have repeated the same mistakes for thousands of years. Nothing is going to change anytime soon - at least not in our lifetime.

It needs to change. It really needs to change. The good people need to not be scared, and from being scared, elect or make the bad choices.

I remember a fellow Floodian saying that he unintentionally saved a girl from killing herself simply by striking up a friendly conversation with her. She said that because she saw that not everyone was a terrible person, she decided not to kill herself.

Check out The Game Lounge

We have too many guns. 88 guns for every 100 people, the most in the world.

OT: I agree, I have seen this trend a lot lately. It is disturbing, I see it a ton in politics too, aren't our leaders supposed to be the best of us?

I understood what you said and agree about loners.
I am saying why are you singling out and picking on America when this occurs in every first world country?

Because I am an American. I can't go and fix the problems in Afghanistan or China. Their citizens have to look for themselves. A Chinese citizen didn't come over from Beijing to stab American students. No, that was one of ours.

If we want to be Reagan's "Shining City on the Hill" for the rest of the world, we need to fix ourselves.

Okay, you can still mention how "you want to fix America" and stuff, but I respectfully am asking you to change your title from "In the US, we are a sick society" to something that concerns all humans.
I told you. There is no way to fix all things in the world. We can fix our society though.

Okay, so say that all countries are having this bad trend of loners, and then mention how you can fix it in America. There's no need to insult America this much. Your same point will be made exactly, so why not change it to not be so offensive?

The idea that gun control is the only method is dangerous. At least to the rights that US citizens have become accustomed.

The right to bear arms came about when there was still a very real threat of England invading again.

Living 100 years in the past isn't something to be proud about.

I mean this.

You can argue gun control, but that doesn't address the true and real problem. Incidents like today's would happen with or without guns. Sure, the body count would be lower, but an incident would have still happened.

We have become a cold and uncaring people. We do our best to avoid contact, and look to take no responsibility for our own actions. We feel entitled to things we do not earn, and get angry and resentful when we don't get what we want.

Oh great, more of this "good old days" bull-blam!-.

People have always criticized others for being "entitled" and looking to "take no responsibility". Of course, the criticism always comes when other people are asking for things.

  • 12.14.2012 6:28 PM PDT

<3

OP thinks we should be responsible for a bunch of lonely fa/ggot emo kids shooting up schools. How about they just grow some -blam!- nuts and some hair on their chests. We haven't been creating loners, those have always existed, we've created wussies maybe we need to be more harsh.

Yeah we need stations all over the country to give out hugs and compliments so these losers don't get their feelings hurt because that's every country besides the U.S. is doing.

It certainly does bear asking why the number of "psychopath" incidents seems to be so much higher in the US than elsewhere.

1- Look at percentages rather than numbers. You forget to account for the total number of people in the U.S., how large it is, how many of those crimes were committed with guns or knives etc.
2- The media is reporting now on it because it's a hot subject, and on the democratic agenda.

Especially since things haven't always been this way.

If you're referring to gun crimes in the western world, then fair enough.

But mass murders? Just lol.
