The reason we have guns is not for hunting or defense, it is if we ever need them to fight tyranny or oppression of the government.
If the USMIL ever decided to attack its own civilians, we'd stand no chance. It doesn't matter how many guns we have when they have drones, Blackhawk helicopters, tanks, etc.
Actually, it's more than possible to fight the US military. It would be a rocky start, but if a decent sized group of people with hunting rifles played it right, raided convoys, and seized military grade weapons from said raids, its more than plausible.
Furthermore, you also have to realize that there would be military units that would rebel from the government in order to help the US citizens.
Are you serious?
Yes. It's been done before, it can be done again. There is rarely a government that survives a full scale rebellion by the people.
And besides, a lot of American soldiers are in the 'fight for your country', 'defend your country' mentality. Would they disobey orders and betray the Government?
No, the majority of American soldiers have the, "Fight for your people, defend your people" mentality. If you actually took notice to the oaths, soldiers are sworn in to protect the constitution and the people of the US. Their duty derives not from the government, but rather the American citizens themselves. Officers don't actually swear to obey orders in their oath, like the majority of countries require their soldiers to do.
The military revolves not around allegiance to the state, but rather loyalty to the people.
