Subject: Has anyone seen The Hobbit?

If so, without revealing any spoilers(even though I've read the book), how was it?

Wait, it's a movie?

"It is the cruelest fate, to have written words that meant well and see them made wicked and unwise. What was meant to encourage life, used instead to justify taking it."

To be spoiler-free, it's a wonderful movie that deserves better than its Rotten Tomatoes score of 65-ish%. Many scenes followed the book verbatim, and the additional content added from the appendices of The Return of the King increases the anticipation for the future films. There were a few deviations from Tolkien's lore that I was a bit iffy about, but by the end of film 3 I suppose I'll like these changes a bit better. The CGI is impressive, and the scenery is gorgeous as always.

Wait, it's a movie?

It's originally a book, written sort of as a prequel to the Lord of The Rings in 1937(though not originally intended to be so). The movie was just released today.

Si hoc legere scis, nimis eruditionis habes

Just got back from it. It drags on a little at times, but overall it was great. Not LOTR great, but great. Easily an 8/10 in my book.

However, based on how much of the book they covered in the movie, one of the next two Hobbit movies is going to either be much shorter or drag on for much longer than this one.

At first I saw the metacritic critics' reviews and I was getting a little worried. Now I'm very excited.

I have no idea what the frame rate was. I saw it in 3D IMAX, so it could have been 42 FPS.

The reason the critics are giving it mixed reviews is because they expected a tone similar to The Lord of the Rings. The readers of the books knew better and expected a slightly lighter tone, and they walked away very satisfied.

I heard the 42 FPS version of the movie made it extremely distracting and difficult to watch. You would probably know if it was 24 or 42. There's a huge difference.

I didn't notice anything strange, so I must have seen it in 24 FPS.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” – Psalms 46:1-3

I just got home from seeing it.

I loved LOTR.

I FRICKEN ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE HOBBIT!

Peter Jackson is so getting another emmy!

The Hobbit isn't as dark as LOTR
it has more comedy
it has songs

of course the critics aren't going to like it; they were expecting a LOTR prequel, not the thing that inspired LOTR.

Well The Hobbit book is a lot lighter than the LOTR books anyway.

...excuse me? You better fix this quick, son.

I give it a solid A- and only because some scenes were a little bit longer than necessary especially in the beginning. Other than that it was perfect. Gollum was terrific, Biblo was good, Gandalf was good, everything else was just right.

  • 12.14.2012 7:21 PM PDT

Was gunna go see it, but I didn't have my LOTR's t-shirt, and I refuse to see it without it.

my point entirely.

anyway, Ian McKellen's age really shows in the first scene.
i'm not even joking it was almost painful trying to imagine how he could be 60 years younger than in LOTR, but as soon as the story starts you see nothing like that again.

Does he just move like a slow old man during the movie or does he actually, you know, move like he did in the LOTR movies?

Gandalf is immortal, so 60 years will have practically no affect on him.

Brainwashing, idiotic media: "hur dur, vido gaems cas vilenc n iz nt gud. dey ned 2 b baned."

Logic: Really? Then please explain how there's violence in third world countries. I guess they're all poor due to the large amount of video games they buy.

Basically this OP. I just got back from The Hobbit and it just blew me away. I'm sure that people are giving it bad reviews because they haven't read the book and trying to base it of LOTR.

well he isn't in loads of the fight scenes anyway, but the ones he is in he's just as active as he was.

it's just that one scene at the start. he just looks and sounds so old in it.
