Subject: Why would anybody want to be a soldier?

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

I'm confounded by the idea that people would sign away their lives for... what? Their country? Money?

Why would anybody want to give themselves away to fight someone else's battles?

I almost joined the Army back in Summer because I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life. A lot of people do it for school because the GI Bill pays for most colleges in your state.

"I once knew a man who spent his entire life contemplating where we go after our death....it's a shame he realized it a second too late to tell anyone."

Money, nationalism, a way to kill without consequences, family tradition, a sense of honor or duty, etc....

I ended the list because that's all I could think of at the moment, but i'm sure there are others. The "killing without consequence" is the only bit i'd go for, though.

LOL

You fight like a younger man, with nothing held back. Admirable, but mistaken.

We lack adventure now. We sit in our safe homes and watch TV, browse the internet, get fat and lazy. 100 years ago, our ancestors would be disapointed in our generation and our lifestyle.

Lol no.

It doesn't make any sense.

Only a government can convince a man he is at war with someone he's never met half way around the world. Money/college, I ask so what? They forget the psychological/emotional impact as well as the possible injuries they may incur on their stint.

Well said, although a lot of unpatriotic lazy asses would have you think otherwise.

To defend your family and country in case of an invasion. If you mean joining the military on the attacking side, maybe it's because of all these influence from video games glorifying killing and being a badass and all that.
