Believe me, I know. I understand. I even agree. But surely you must see the necessity of the double standard? Think about it: You have the ability to understand those of lesser intellect/age/ability, but they do not always have the ability to understand you. So, in order to fashion the most cohesive communication, the two parties need to find communal ground.
Now, nobody is asking you to be condescending - you don't have to lower your english abilities to talk to people less educated than you. All you have to do, with the 'wide' vocabulary that you have, is to find a more efficient way of explaining something - a way that will be understood by more people. THIS is good use of the english language, not speaking in academic terms regardless of whether the situation calls for it.
You should know better than to demonise people for getting frustrated when they feel they're being patronised.
And there's no need to play the victim either - you give as good as you get. I know what you did wasn't necessarily intentional, but that shouldn't stop you from questioning your rational', regardless of what conclusion you may come to.
I do see the necessity of the double-standard. That doesn't mean that I neccesarily support it. I agree that communication should be prized over simple, 'speak' (for lack of better terms). However, I also believe that use in a general context will prove a progressive step toward better grammar/spelling. Believe it or not, I used to type and speak as many do on the interweb. However, through a few of the communities I was involved with, it was stressed to use propper english, and slowly (in a attempt to become a norm in the community) began to type better. Using periods, then capitals, then other grammar, untill I am where I am now. As far as the vocabulary, that built, as more specific means of explanation were required to convey my thoughts.
I believed that what I had typed, the words I had used, were quite understandable via context, if not. There are always ways to look it up (although I realize that not even a equal majority would). However, I still believe, that if they won't cater at least a little to my quirks, then I should not have to be held to theirs either. Now, I realize that the point may come up "Well, if you are intelligent, or wise, why would you act in such an ignorant way?"
I just assume that, even if someone doesn't type the way I do, doesn't use the language I do...That they at least understand it. If they don't, fine, I will reiterate. Mostly they do, though, just like I understand theirs...So it really isn't a big deal.
I don't wish to play the game, of Defendant nor Prosecutor. I only wish to clerify my personal position. Which, will require a bit of both, I will not stand to be prosecuted, and I try not to prosecute. Although anyone can be drug into it. I appreciate the dialog here though.
