For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.
While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.
People that want to change gun laws need to read and understand what laws are already in place and statistics for gun crime.
Firstly, assault rifles are few and far between. Assault rifles have to have select-fire capabilities. Civilian AR and AK variants lack this. A real assault rifle requires a tax stamp from the ATF (which requires months of checks and processing), a select-fire transferable receiver made and registered before May 1986, and a ton of money.
Secondly, most crimes are committed with illegally purchased handguns. Handguns require you to be 21 y/o to own one, and a license to carry them. How difficult or easy the license is to obtain varies state to state.
Rifles and shotguns that are over 29" in length, with a barrel over 16" in length can be purchased after the age of 18. Weapons with barrels or overall lengths shorter than the aforementioned require a tax stamp from the ATF, which takes months to process.
A background check is required anytime you purchase firearm from a an FFL. A bill of sale should be made for all private sales. Criminals cannot legally purchase a firearm. They get them through illegal channels, such as the black market or stealing them.
Our laws are not the problem. The amount of ignorance and bad people are the problem. Banning something has never worked in the US. All it does is create a high demand with no supply, except through illegal means that only serve to make criminals rich.
