So far, this is the only answer that makes any sense.

Damn it, we never got imaginaries in our math. Equations are meant to be solved.

What is x + x^2 + x^3, if x^2 = -1

A) -1
B) 1
C) x
D) -x

:)

x + x^2 + x^3, if x^2 = -1

x^2=-1

x=-1^(1/2)

x=i

i+i^2+i^3

Type that into my graphical calculator and I get -1. So I guess that means A.

All my life is a lie
But you can solve it

Every time you get a root of -1 just put an i. When you square i you get a -1, easy peasy.

And what the -blam!- is -2^(1/2)?

Well we can separate that into:

root(2) * root(-1)

So we get root(2) i

What about the cube root of minus 4?

Negative numbers can have real cube roots.

Cube root of -4 is about -1.6

Well that's wrong because cubing that gives you a complex number

The three roots should be 0.79 + 1.37i, 0.79 - 1.37i and -1.6, as long as neither of you have made a mistake.

Yes, I know my username is the 330th sequel to a terrible movie. You don't have to keep telling me.

Exponents cannot equal negative numbers.

I don't even -blam!- know...

x^2 cant be -1, exept if x = i = sqrt(-1)

NO. NO. NO. NO. NO.

Do not define i = sqrt(-1) since mathematicians will murder you.
define i^2 = -1. Much better.

Oh yeah, because it can be +/- i

How did you guys calc this? I'm sure it's impossible to specify the square root of -1.

Am I missing something?
