Thread inspired by the other thread of Fox blaming Video Games for the Connecticut Cut shootings.

Anyways, before you go ahead and call me stupid or an idiot for this, just read a bit more.

Isn't it entirely possible, that at least a few of shootings DID get motivated/inspired by violent video games? I know many of us would want to deny it, as we are gamers, and blaming video games would mean they'd try to take away our precious video games. However, after all the countless, countless, claims that video games encouraged someone to do this, isn't it just a little possible that there may be some truth to it? You can't just throw them all away, if 5 teens go shoot something up, and they all happened to have played Call of Duty a lot, isn't it possible to link them together? I mean, it doesn't make it true, but it could be a possibility, and to throw away the claim because it'll 'take away our video games' is a little silly.

I mean, we see it all the time on The Flood and the Internet, blaming kids for 'being stupid' now a days on the Media, we blame it on shows like 'Jersy Shore' and what not, if we are so quick to blame it on shows like this, why are we so quick to not even consider the fact that Video Games don't help motivate someone?

Not saying I believe it or not, but, can't the claim hold a little truth to it?

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Bhineka Tunggal Ika!!

...how?

I mean, unless they're playing Postal or GTA, in most shooter we kill aleons or Arabs/Russians so I think it should affect on how people want to join military or some -blam!- like that.

This. If you blame video games, you can blame other variables such as movies, TV, the internet, and all sorts of other shnit.

I would argue this, but still say that the video game is at least somewhat culpable. Not in the most recent case of Adam Lanza, but in some cases, yes.

but without the video games these problems wouldn't have evolved into something that serious i reckon

but seriously, you can't start banning -blam!- because idiots are using it in the wrong way

Joe Rogan once said

"Yea lets make hammers illegal too, so that you can't hit yourself in the dick"

Handguns though, that's a whole other story

Yes, but it's very rare.

But you have to realize ALL violent media does have a very small impact on some people, but again, it's very small and it's very rare.

Is it possible? Of course it's possible. I don't necessarily think it is the only factor going into it. But I believe it can be a factor occasionally.

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Brighten your day with science.

Yes, but hundreds of other variables have just as much of an impact.

Singling out video games alone will make you seem irrational.

WW2 happened before video games.

  • 12.15.2012 2:58 PM PDT

Video games are more likely to inhibit violence than cause it.

  • 12.15.2012 3:02 PM PDT

Yes, it's possible. Probable even. (I know what you're thinking, but don't stop reading now)

It's probable that SOME of these shooting that have happened around the world are influenced by video games, such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc. However, the only people that would influenced by video games in this way are those that are....shall we say....mentally unstable. These people already have some sort of ladent psychological problem that makes them act out video games in real life. This brings me to the point that I think is a little more possible than completely banning guns (which I am still 100% for): There should be a deep psychological evaluation for anyone who wants to buy a gun. The idea of "everyone should be allowed to own a gun" is bull. Some people shouldn't be allowed to own one. There should be a mental evaluation required before purchasing a gun. Don't like it, go screw yourself. I'm sure this would never be put into law because people are too sensitive to things like that, and we are taught to treat each other as equals, and all that fluffly BS. It's possible some of the shooters were people that played video games, and had a mental disorder that caused them to act it out in real life. Don't blame the video games, blame the restricted laws that allow anyone to own a gun, even those with undiagnoised mental problems.

Huh, that was longer than I expected.

Yes, it is.

to say that it is "not possible" would be silly.

But I don't think that many shootings are the result of video games alone.

Dear Floodians:

A Girl thread a day keeps the ladies at bay and gets us banned, the lonely single way.

Perhaps, but blaming virtual guns more than actual guns is just retarded in my opinion.
