Oh Yes!

I'm pretty sure that's how the book was written.

But...I'm going to go see it tonight with friends...

:3

No worries. Just expect it to be of a lighter tone...like it is in the book.

Lighter tone as in not as much action and gloomy? I haven't read the books, but I'm planning to eventually.

Because Tolkien totally didn't write There and Back Again for his children...

Tolkien wrote The Hobbit basically as a bed time story for his kids. Everybody liked it so he followed it up with LOTR. It's not really childish, but you don't get a sense of impending doom like you do watching the LOTR movies.

There is plenty of action.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Well if the book was written in a lighter tone and the movie was meant to be based on the book...

See you on the battlefield.

I thought the movie was fairly faithful to the original book (with a few exceptions, to be expected from any film adaptation), which was actually intended to be a children's book, so complaining about the tone of the movie in this regard means you missed the point entirely.

I have zero idea what is happening in this thread, but it's -blam!- hilarious.

I thought it was ok. Had a few childish moments in it, really disliked all of the Dwarves. Bilbo was a quick favorite showing courage where it mattered.

Well, the book was aimed at children, I'm glad to hear it has stayed true to the book.

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

The Hobbit book was aimed at ten-year-olds.

Shakes Magic 8 Ball

In your opinion, how close in "seriousness" is it compared to the trilogy?

Basically, there are just a few light humorous moments. Other than that, it's just as serious.

<(-_-)> Teh mokey is not amused

He wrote the hobbit for his kids, it's not going to be full of evil and sorrow, it's a jolly tale about a hobbit going on an adventure.

Just remember that no matter how terrible you feel, or how much you want to let go, there are people who care about you and love you.
