Subject: Hey look! More shots fired.

"Right now it is raining methane on Titan. The planet Uranus is, hilariously, orbiting the sun sideways while Venus spins backwards. We sit here on a planet marked with collisions, rocked by earthquakes, shaken by storms. A planet doomed to be fried in radiation as its magnetic fields collapse, until the sun grows and leaves nothing of the earth but dust. Here we sit, glasses on our noses, inhalers in our pockets, braces on our teeth, and we say "Behold the perfect ORDER of it all!""

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

Just remember that no matter how terrible you feel, or how much you want to let go, there are people who care about you and love you.

This, we need to stop placing the blame on inanimate objects and start actually helping these people.

I would put the blame on our mental healthcare, or lack thereof. These shootings rarely occur in the places where everyone carries concealed. I just heard a news story where someone attempted a shooting in Alabama, but was quickly taken out by someone carrying concealed. I think we should focus on improving the mental and physical health of our country as a whole, rather than blaming an inanimate object for the deaths of a few people.

I'd love to be able to go out in public without worrying about getting shot.

You can.

Ironic how these shootings are happening in the places with the most stringent gun laws.
Ironic? Kinda. Mostly just a blaring alarm about how our gun policies are broken.

I don't think it's either-or; it's a combination. We need to make sure that mentally unstable people don't have access to firearms, as well as making sure that access to sufficient mental health care is more widespread.

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

Charlie, am I agreeing with you on something? The world might be ending on the 21st after all...

Heard about this earlier. My friend was at Fashion Island just an hour beforehand.

Damned shame.

Can we stop shooting each other for like, five seconds?

  • 12.15.2012 6:35 PM PDT

Derp

people say that people with guns can shoot a killer, but to identify that killer, the killer would have had to kill someone already. it prevents a few deaths, and makes a guy a hero, but it doesn't stop the problem.
