Subject: I'm ashamed of (some of) my family.

Argle argle!

Not my dad's side of the family, but my mom's side.

You see, most of them are extremely religious, narrow-minded hicks from Texas. When I see one of their posts on Facebook, I just cringe and scroll down quickly.

Let me elaborate on one instance. My cousin admitted he was -blam!- a while back, and my grandma, a strict Baptist, now says he's going to Hell.

It's not that I hate them... at all. I just don't like being associated with them. I know it's pretty terrible, but I can't help it.

Could this be a sign of my own short-comings? Do you have to deal with such ignorant family?

My redneck aunt keeps posting about how there's some sort of war on god because kids can't pray in school. Apparently she's knows nothing of the separation of church and state.

in·dif·fer·ence
the fact or state of being indifferent; lack of care or concern and empathy demonstrated by an absence of emotional reactions.

I'm ashamed of my whole family.
My family is just a mess of arguing and shady goings on.

Great minds discuss ideas

Average minds discuss events

Small minds discuss people

No, you don't have to associate with them if they are narrow-minded. However, being very religious doesn't make you narrow-minded, it just gives people an excuse to justify their own personal views.

  • 12.15.2012 6:14 PM PDT

if you don't want to be associated with them then legally disown them. simple as that.

"I once knew a man who spent his entire life contemplating where we go after our death....it's a shame he realized it a second too late to tell anyone."

Meh, I don't care what my family members think or do, as long as it doesn't negatively impact me. Their beliefs and actions aren't my business.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year

I have some of those in my family too. I feel for you.

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

Those kind of religious people really annoy me. Their judgmental, holier-than-thou attitude makes the rest of us look bad.

I'd say to just ignore them.

No, I wasn't implying that. I'm not a pretentious atheist. (I'm not even Atheist, I just don't believe in organized religion.) I was saying that on top of being very religious, they're also narrow-minded.

Sometimes, I dream about cheese.

You can pick your friends but you can't pick your family.

You can however legally disown them.

I like to play Reach for fun. I hate MLG, campers, armor lock, and team killers because they ruin that fun. Deal with it.

My aunt constantly posts things on Facebook that bashes Obama and I don't like it; not because it challenges any of my beliefs but because of how ignorantly she does it. I just choose to ignore it.

I choose who is in my life. Most of my family is not.

I refuse to be involved with negative minded individuals. I don't care if they're family.

@spaboolly

My father's family has disavowed any relation to me as I am his illegitimate child. They are all Irish Catholics, from Louisiana, and any one of them could be the poster child for stuck up, closed minded, bigoted religious zealots.

I do not consider it a loss to not associate with them. It is your choice, OP, who you allow to be part of your life. Live in accordance with your own values and people will respect you for who you are.

There's a lot of people on my mum's side that I don't like.

Dumb people are just blissfully unaware of how very dumb they are.

My whole family is pretty -blam!- up...

My cousin on my mom side has already been to jail and shes 18.

On my dad side my Cousin say she's -blam!- even though she's been pregnant before,so I'm pretty sure shes an attention whore.

The most dangerous gunslinger in the west.

I'm sure almost all families have people who shun them, either for being close-minded or open-minded.

Most of my family is okay the only one I hate is my aunt. She's a total -blam!- who treats my grandma(her mother) like complete -blam!-, when my grandma does a lot for her.

Remember those times when we all had something better to be doing, but didn't do it? Those were good times. Gooood times

My family is pretty normal/open minded, although I'm a bit 'different' than the rest. The rest of my family enjoy taking life at an unreasonably fast pace while I like to enjoy things... Slowly...

There's lots of narrow-mindness in my mother's side, including an ultra-religious aunt that I don't particularly dislike, but rather find to be mildly annoying.

She literally goes to church ever single -blam!- day, no exceptions, and she does seem to care about charity and all that stuff, so I guess it's ok.

If it doesn't affect me, why should I care?

Well, based on the replies I would guess this isn't exactly an uncommon problem.

This. That's not what Christianity is.
