I came across some interesting statistics.
Excel linky.
2009:
Number of homicides by firearms.
Canada: 173.
US: 10,300.
Homicides by firearm per 100,000 population.
Canada: 0.5.
US: 3.3.
Seriously, what the hell is going on with you guys down south?
Our major cities and our populated ares are more dense than Canada which is made up of less dense areas and more rural spots. But what about these mass shootings? I mean, the deaths from the Dark Knight Rises shooting alone was roughly equivalent to 10% of our average yearly gun homicides. Throw in the Connecticut shooting and that jumps to about 20%.
When we see comments saying, "this kind of thing happens all the time", we're baffled. Because shooting like this are a rarity here in Canada. Not saying that they don't ever happen, but they seem to happen in the US with alarming frequency.
