Subject: Honest Questions to "Pro-Gun"-ers

Key

While I am for stricter gun laws, I can definitely understand the point of view of people who want them to stay where they are. I don't agree with it in the slightest, but I can understand that side of the argument.

If that is the case, and you are against stricter gun regulations, through what other means should we go to fix or at least put a damper on these public shootings and murders we have? Please put aside any "stop putting it on the news" solutions, as those are illogical and will not happen.

This isn't meant to be a "Ha! Gotcha! Now I win!"-type of question, I legitimately want to know. Clearly guns are not the only problem, even from a pro-gun-law-reform standpoint it's foolish to suggest that. So what else do we do?

If the topic in general is too broad, confine your ideas to the protection of schools.

That was unnecessary and is not what this thread is about.

I've got a fan!

1. Licenses for gun ownership, specific to type of gun (handgun, rifle, shotgun, etc) that requires an annual proficiency and safety test to obtain
2. Registration of all weapons sold, similar to a car title
3. Gun ranges would be required to verify license and ownership of weapons for all customers. Temporary licenses would be supplied for use at that range only, assuming it is under supervision and uses guns owned and rented by the range

Obviously. It isn't a car's fault that thousands of people get hurt in car accidents each year. It doesn't mean they aren't dangerous.

Sorry OP. I am just so sick of people misplacing the blame.

I don't know how to fix this, but we definitely shouldn't make the school shooters more famous than their victims.

/thread. Sort of.

We need to properly address the root problem, and that is the mental nature of our nation. Soon as we supply a better mental healthcare system , thing like this will decrease in frequency. They'll never go away completely, as nutjobs will always be here, but we can do more preventative measures by aiding and properly caring for emotionally and mentally disturbed individuals.

Two movies you should watch: Fight Club and Pineapple Express

"Wait. What do you mean, it's dead?"
"If marijuana is not legal within the next five years I have no faith left in humanity, period. Everyone likes smoking weed. They have for thousands of years. They're not going to stop anytime soon. You know? It makes everything better. Makes food taste better, makes music better. It makes sex feel better for God's sake. It makes -blam!- movies better you know?"

Really it all comes down to the shooter's life. Always. People need to find ways to stop others from going insane if it's preventable and it almost always is. There does need to be a mentality check in order to buy guns though.

I think that falls under the category of stricter gun laws.

Yup.

Stop treating the killers like celebrities. Focus more on the victims instead of trying to find out every single detail about the killers.

Try and be nicer to people.

  • 12.16.2012 12:13 AM PDT

I'm for much more strict regulations, but against all-out bans.

Lots of you are suggesting more personal things we can do like be nicer to people and try to help them personally, but what can we as a society do, or even the government do to stop this exponential rise in public/copycat shootings? Is there no agency to be set up, board to be established, law to be passed, system to be used to fix the situation even on a minute level?

  • 12.16.2012 12:16 AM PDT

There's no way to fix it.
(The murders and mass killing and stuff)

Unless you want metal detectors EVERYWHERE.

Until we more strictly hold people accountable for the possession of objects that are inherently designed to kill things, there's no way to reduce these attacks. Every time something like this happens, people look for an easy way to stop it. There isn't one, plain and simple.

No. It is logical and just because you think it can't/won't be done doesn't invalidate the theory.

How can you dismiss a theory if you haven't even tested it yet?

It is logical, by the way. A lonely depressed guy wants to end his life. Like anyone else in life, he wants to be remembered, then he sees the news about a mass shooting. They blaze the persons face and name everywhere 24/7 and cover about it for weeks at a time. Even the president chimes in what he thinks about it. He could be remembered for something like that, he just has to make it even worse than anyone else in history.

Instead of going to a school he goes to a maternity ward and kills all the pregnant women, and then kills himself. Then for weeks his name and face are plastered everywhere and the president chimes in what he thinks about it. He will be remembered.

Explain to me how it makes no sense for a mentally ill person to wanna be remembered by slaughtering innocent people since there is no other way to be remembered because they are psychotic and sociopathic. I -blam!- DARE you.

They already check for mental health problems. The guy responsible for the school shooting got the gun illegally.

Or we could give EVERYONE guns.

From the ashes

Please put aside any "stop putting it on the news" solutions, as those are illogical and will not happen.

While illogical, it indeed would help if a possibility. These type of people don't mind being remembered as a monster, so long as they are remembered. And the type of publicity these events supply, pretty much sees this happening.

Simply put, I have no ideas, or ideas that would actually be feasible. Sure, security for schools is a possibility, but that is additional payroll for a potentially risky job. Risky jobs usually require higher pay as a compensation for the risks involved. And where a schools budget is usually strapped as it is, it would be hard to fund.

Stricter regulations? Maybe, but if these types of events still happen, people will wonder where they went wrong, leading to radical; or just plain idiotic laws beings passed. If people really want a gun, they will find a way to obtain one no matter what.

In the end of the day, these are people that needed attention in more ways than one to stop them from breaking. And this type of action requires friends, family, and sometimes outsiders like teachers or aids to make that effort. Sadly, we live in a society where people are rather isolated in their worries, a lot of us are certainly guilty of this; myself included.

As life has taught me though, even if we did this, there will always be an exception. Random violence cannot be stopped, as some of these people will snap no matter what happens to help them. We can only hope the warning signs are spotted before they do anything dire.

All this said, it's late here, and I don't feel like getting into a deep discussion tonight. So this will be my only 2-cents in this topic.

Ha, since when? In many states, including mine, you can just walk into a WalMart and buy a gun.
