At first it seems like a really dumb idea, but if you think about it, it could have lots of uses.

It should be able to be destroyed, and quite quickly, so that it does not unbalance the weapons.

The SWAT idea is great, and it would be good for escorting vunerable people (e.g. people with flag/ball/bomb).

I think it would be cool to deflect grenades with it, and skilled people can learn how to bounce one just right, or how to counter the bounce. I can see it providing much fun.

I agree. The shield would act as though it were a weapon, and would take up one of the two slots, though it would be most effective when dual-wielded with another single-handed weapon like the SMG or Magnum pistol, in which case a third weapon could be packed away, like the Assault rifle.

The shield would likely have a limited energy bar, much like the energy sword in singleplayer -- which I still think should be given limited energy in Halo 3 multiplayer next time around -- and the bar would deplete as it absorbed and deflected gunfire when deployed. For the sake of balance and skill, the shield would only be activated while the trigger it was bound to was held down -- letting go of the trigger would still keep it in the player's left or right hand, though the sheild would deactivate, leaving only a powered-down object much like the Energy Sword's handle in the player's lowered hand. It would display a similar animation to the Sword's weilding animation when activated, too. Maybe the shield could even be made so as to slowly lose its energy reserve while it was activated, even, and would be vulnerable to enemy fire only while activated.

Of course, depending on the severity and exact distance of a close-range grenade explosion, the shield while activated would blow out instantly. The trick to combating it with grenades would depend on the user's skill to land one next to the player who's equipped with a shield, and not get them to bounce it off of its surface.
