A lot of you probably remember the thread with this quote from Morgan Freeman about the shooting:
"You want to know why? This may sound cynical, but here's why. It's because of the way the media reports on it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody."

My question is what do you think the media should do with situations like this? I agree with him about how the media turns them into celebrities. I remember when the kids who shot up columbine were on the cover of time magazine.

Dumb people are just blissfully unaware of how very dumb they are.

Every time Morgan freeman explains something he gains a freckle.

The media only likes to report things that people find horrible and negative, because it draws a crowd. People like to live every day of their lives as if nothing bad happened in the world. Truth is, this stuff happens enough. Media controls what you see in the world and affects how it is presented to people.

We do treat bad things on television like celeberties. Not just killers.

That's not explaining what the media can do to "fix" that...

I think he's saying the media cannot fix it, for financial reasons?

You can't rely on others to fix things for you. If the media fails at delivering what should be news, then I'll go and find it alternatively and be better off. I don't rely on the media.

I don't care for it.

He's entirely correct. If they have to cover the events, the media shouldn't name, describe or release any pictures of the shooter(s) whatsoever. Just refer to them as "the gunmen", mention them as little as possible and concentrate on the victims and their actions.

The headteacher at Connecticut was killed as he lunged at the gunman. Nope, don't know who is is, what his name is, what he looks like... can't even he sure he's a he. In stark contrast to the shooter.

Who am I?

mah twitter

Media should only focus on the event and not the person who did it. Maybe they shouldn't even tell his name or anything.

edit. the user above me said pretty much what I had in mind ^^^^

I don't rely on the media, Silly. Not even the weather. OP was just asking what the media should do in situations like this shooting in regards to what Freeman said.

Did freeman even say this, really? I'm always a nonbeliever.

"Moooooooo"
-Ghost cow

Make it like a documentary. I'm in Hong Kong now and I saw the thing on the news - they just reported it like any other incident. Detailed the shooting, showed a short 3D diagram of how the shooting happened. I understand that it is not very significant to the media here but I am simply suggesting that American media do the same thing, instead of - what's the word? - sensationalising the whole thing.
