Mental competency tests for people who live in your household might help. I know, it's extreme. I know it's irrational. But as long as you don't have a crazy person in your house, you'll still get your gun. Your rights are not infringed.

And, if you do have someone with some sort of serious mental issue in your household, you're required to have a specific system of containing the gun. A lock system of some sort. A specific grade gun case. Etc. Obviously the requirements would change based on the gun itself.

Just an idea. I know it's not a good one as it's a prototype of an idea of an outline of a first draft of an idea for a law, but still.
This is the first logical pro gun-control suggestion I can recall seeing. We already prevent mentally unstable people from buying guns; it makes sense that we make people with unstable dependents responsible for the guns in their own household. I'm not sure how'd you enforce it aside from charging someone after the fact with some sort of negligence.

Of course, there are other changes that need to take place for this kind of law to work. The way we currently deal with mental illness is insufficient.

UK:

Guns are banned unless you have explicit licences explaining that you use them for hunting, farming or sport.

Works so far.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

So they started by shooting the kids who mocked them,
The shooters at Columbine High School did no kill or target anyone who bullied them, they simply wanted to create a large body count .

There were ~200 knife related homicides in the UK THEREFORE THERE''S NO PROBLEM WITH ~10,000 GUN RELATED DEATHS IN THE US.

I really don't get when this comes up. People say "Gee maybe the Americans need to adopt gun regulations such as the United States' counterparts have" and the response is "Yeah but 200 were stabbed to death in the UK".

Maybe have your mental capacity permit renewed annually or biannually by taking your case to a government agency (OMG OMG OMG MOAR JOBS YAY JOBS GO JOBS) and have it approved based on said guidelines. Or, if you have an in-home set up, set up a house call to have a Mental Capacity Safety Inspection Agent come to your house and make sure your set up is up to code.

I'm tired of arguing the same points over and over again. Just because you think your thread has a fancier OP than the other Gun Threads, doesn't mean it won't have the same, tired, old discussion we always do.

There are very few Americans that would allow bureaucrats to entre their homes and inspect their gun safes.

Just saiyan.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

How about everyone else stays out of America's affairs? Is it asking too much to just be left to our own devices?

Okay, Australia is now a protectorate of China.

Because this is the view the majority of Australia shares, buddy. Why don't you come here and visit our wonderful country for yourself instead of being ignorant?

Does anyone seriously think the US army would ever attack it's own citizens?

As for self defense, I think non-lethal weapons are way more appropriate for people looking to defend themselves in case of a home invasion. Not only do they not have to worry about the guilt of killing someone, but also should, God forbid, a child get their hand on the weapon, the chance of a fatality occurring is smaller.

I just feel this route is all around better for the benefit of society. Sure, criminals will still get guns. But isn't even criminals who are committing these atrocious acts.

Then they bring in specs, schematics, set ups, something to prove they're up to code. If they lie it's fraud. But the specs is only if its an in-home set up impossible to move.

Switzerland has the lowest crime rate AND every male is required to have military training AND every male who goes through military training(which is required) KEEPS his rifle.

If you'd like to find the number of gun related homicides caused by Mexican drug cartels and subtract them from the total of American gun related deaths and then compare them then by all means. It's not going to change anything.

And can you use some arithmetic? 4x the population, sure. Does 200 x 4 = 10,000? Maybe there'd be a worthy discussion is gun related deaths in the US were ~800.

You linked to a page about homicide rate, not crime rate. And even on that page Switzerland is 17th best. lolwuT?

Also, what about Israel where everyone is require to have military service? They're at 2.1. Larger than Iraq, England, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, and many others who don't have this policy.

Your point is invalid.

As for self defense, I think non-lethal weapons are way more appropriate for people looking to defend themselves in case of a home invasion.
Maybe if we had non-lethal weapons that could fire more than one or two shots, or had a range more than 15 feet.

The only exception I know of is the special 12 guage stuns rounds (which are basically tiny projectile stun guns), but those still use a regular shotgun. Unfortunately they're also limited to law-enforcement only.

Honestly, that's not a good trade-off for the severe disadvantages that current non-lethal weapons have.
Posted by: A Deaf Boy
but also should, God forbid, a child get their hand on the weapon, the chance of a fatality occurring is smaller.
People that observe proper gun safety and instill such values in their children don't usually have problems with that.

There has to be other alternatives in the non-lethal area than that...

Yeah, but that's the point too. As this shooting shows, some people don't observe the proper safety precautions and/or don't instill the proper values in their kids. Now, they have access to deadly weapons.

The point is people aren't supposed to break into someone elses house. If they get rid of guns the guy is still leaving my house in a body bag.

That's their problem not yours. What if your kid finds the car keys and crashes or gets in the medicine cabinet? You don't see people saying car keys need to be locked u, guns are no different. If you leave your gun laying around and don't tell the kid to not look down the barrel or point at others then it's on you.

Covan was here, December 20th.

Come back later, after he's out of Parris Island.

Nobody ever uses weapons to defend themselves anyway.

At least, you hardly hear about any stories like that on the news.

Every time there's a shooting, the gunmen have to kill themselves.

Guns don't kill people. Unstable individuals who gained access to guns in spite of mental illness kill people.

There was no motive to this shooting besides creating a body count. That is insanity.

I have no issue with civilian ownership of semiautomatic and other firearms with minimal to no registration. In fact, this is the only way a people can truly have the last word against its government if need be. HOWEVER, we need to work to identify mental illness.

Because it doesn't benefit news agencies to make a big deal out of such stories. Here's a few quick links I've used in past arguments today:

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.
