Well with an attitude like that it seems that you're intent on making it so.

I very much agree with you. Taking all guns from the equation would mean people wont need a gun to defend themselves from other people with guns. Unfortunately this wont work, with Americans believing it is a fundamental right to own a firearm. Riot or something similar would occur if the government attempted to remove all the firearms. But it is pretty stupid how obsessed they are with their guns and they think more guns in society would make it safer.

What a wonderful plan you have there.

Oh wait...

So tell me. How are you going to collect all the firearms in the United States that are already out there? There is an estimated 270,000,000 civilian held guns out there. That means roughly for every 100 people, there are 88 firearms. You aren't going to be able to undo almost 300 years of "stockpiling".

One other problem. Some of the older guns may or may not even have a serial number or even be registered. That means, unless you go door to door, you won't find them. And I'll take a bet that most owners wouldn't just go, "Dang, looks like I have to turn in my guns now..." and hand them in.
Who says it needs to all get done tomorrow?

You can do it over a slow process over the next fifty years and eventually register the majority of guns and their owners in America. Not all, sure, but enough so that the minority with unregistered weapons won't make a difference.

You improve your police force to the point where they have sufficient ability to crack down on illegal weapons, drugs, criminal activities and the like.

You have a heavy penalty for those discovered using or in possession of an illegal, unlicensed on unregistered weapon.

And you set this goal for... let's say the year 2035.

A transition will be made, no?

If Fed Ex and UPS merged into one company, would it be called Fed Up?

I don't want to start another account for a digital number that has no true value in ten years.

If you think about it, the second amendment was created when only 1 shot rifles were around. Then with the advancement in technology to create automatic and semi auto weapons, more crimes have been occurring. I honestly don't think our Founding Fathers would have included "right to bear arms" had they understood the more harm it has brought our country since the 1960s.

So a civilian should be legally allowed to own a Mk17, FN Five-Seven, P90 and an FGM-148 Javelin?

I honestly think people should be grandfathered in, you have to register your weapons with the government. Once you do, you get to keep them, but once you pass away they're taken from you. That way they can't be passed down to generations. Also if you don't register and are found with weapons you are arrested and weapons are taken away. Plus the majority of these mass killings are young people.

Why not introduce mandatory military training while you're at it?

You're giving them the equipment, why not give them the training as well?

In fairness there are a lot of countries that allow the purchase of tanks....no cannons though, and modifications to fit with weapons laws.

Hell if you were in an Armoured Corps in the Military, odds are you have a driving licence that allows you to take a tank on the road.

You obviously know NOTHING about our country, or our constitution.

1. I know a flame war when i see one, and whether our not you are trying to start one, this WILL become a flame war.

2. If you read the our list of amendments, then you would stumble across amendment 2, "the right to bear arms". This right allows all american citizens the right to own varias types of fire arms.

3. Every states gun laws are different from the rest. The shooting you are referring to was in Connecticut, and they do things differently in Connecticut then they do things in every other state. For example, in California, (where i live) getting your hands on a gun of any type is VERY difficult.

4. Stop posting about america you -blam!-!

I'm about to repeat an age old argument, but I want you to look at the differences between the guns of that time and this one.

Some good reading.

Here's a small sampling of the 2009 Homicides by Firearm:

Canada: 173.
Netherlands: 55.
Germany: 188.
Australia: 30.
UK: 46.
Denmark: 15.
USA: 10,300.
Columbia: 12,808.
Mexico: 8,804.
Venezuela: 11,115.

How the hell is the USA such an outlier compared to other developed countries? When your annual firearm homicides are closer to Columbia than Canada, it's pretty freaking clear that you have a serious gun violence problem.

And I hate to break it to you, but arming teachers is not going to stop school shootings. I can't comprehend how passing out 9mms to elementary school teachers can be considered a positive outcome to this horrible shooting by some people.

Because that would be forced labour.

Most of the people that bother with the licencing for machine guns and other highly-regulated weapons are current or retired military or law-enforcement, or diehard gun collectors. People that don't know much about these weapons and how to handle them properly aren't very likely to go through the amount of hoops and paperwork required to get one.

Do these people buy these weapons with the intent to use or for display.

IIRC in Australia you can buy deactivated antique weapons legally, but not for use.

Something like that has to be extremely expensive and extremely difficult to license, however, although I do see where you're coming from with that.

Australia
-Only bolt-action rifles may be sold (yes, that means no handguns)
Untrue. Handguns are only unavailable to to target shooters, or competitive shooters.
-These weapons must be sold to the buyer on government propertyThis one doesn't make much sense to me? Are you saying to own a gun in Australia, you'd have to buy the gun in Australia? I'm pretty sure that works the same in any country.
-Buyers must have a valid reason to own the weapon (farming, hunting, ect)Seems reasonable.

-12 month police background check must be completedThat's dependent on the firearm you buy, and the reason given. Most of the waiting is done on the permit, and license rather than the actual firearm.
-No citizen may own more than 2 firearms
I don't see how this prevents gun violence.

America Let's just get this out of the way, gun laws vary depending on the state in which you buy a firearm. The same goes for Australia, and quite a few countries as well, but the size of the US makes it more blatant.

-All kinds of weapons may be soldUntrue in certain states.
-Weapons don't have to be sold on government propertyUntrue anywhere

-Buyer doesn't need valid reason (Anyone can say "to protect myself")I find myself agreeing that this is stupid, considering the possible outcomes of giving someone a gun because we feel they can own one without reason. Even then, not just anyone can have a gun, there are still background checks, and a look into your criminal history.
-Shorter background check (I'm not sure about exact length)The length is based on the state. In a rural areas in the south, you're more likely to get a firearm very quickly as opposed to a sub-urban or urban area.

-Citizens can own many firearms
I don't know how I feel about this one, really. I'm for tighter restrictions on assault rifles, and automatics weapons, but a restriction on the amount you may own seems a bit useless, seeing as having more guns wouldn't make you more viable to kill someone, and a valid reason to own them shouldn't interfere with how many of them you can own.

I might be able to answer some of your questions, such as why do we have such a high -blam!- side rate? Well yes we are a well developed nation, but that doesn't mean that ALL of the people are. Most of the people that attempt -blam!- sides are outcasts, or rejects of society who are angry, and take it out on the people who mock them, or in some cases innocent people. A good example is the columbine incident back in 2003. The two students who started the shooting were the people who were pushed around on a regular bases. So they started by shooting the kids who mocked them, and then started shooting innocent people. After they were finished, they committed suicide. There was a lesson learned from this experience, dont bully people just because they are different. Also, i agree that giving teachers guns is a terrible idea. If my eighth period teacher had a gun, then half of my class would be dead.

Both. If you can afford the ammunition, firing a machine gun at a shooting range is a lot of fun. There used to be a yearly event in Texas (I think it ended a few years ago) where machine gun owners got together and fired at old junk cars until there was nothing left.
Posted by: Garshne

It is difficult to get a licence, and it is expensive.

Though that expense in part come from the manufacturing cut-off; you can only legally buy and licence fully automatic firearms made before a certain date.
