We know what the problem is and America has more problems than just shootings. Good Lord there are so many things to work on.

-These weapons must be sold to the buyer on government propertyThis one doesn't make much sense to me? Are you saying to own a gun in Australia, you'd have to buy the gun in Australia? I'm pretty sure that works the same in any country.

I don't get how you misunderstood that point so much.

I didn't misunderstand as much as I was confused as to why he even brought that up. That law exists pretty much anywhere you go. It isn't just some thing Australia does.

I think he means that guns here in Aussieland must be bought from government institutions. Government property usually means like a parliamentary building, council chambers, and other places where the government operates from.

Some good reading.

Here's a small sampling of the 2009 Homicides by Firearm:

Canada: 173.
Netherlands: 55.
Germany: 188.
Australia: 30.
UK: 46.
Denmark: 15.
USA: 10,300.
Columbia: 12,808.
Mexico: 8,804.
Venezuela: 11,115.

How the hell is the USA such an outlier compared to other developed countries? When your annual firearm homicides are closer to Columbia than Canada, it's pretty freaking clear that you have a serious gun violence problem.

And I hate to break it to you, but arming teachers is not going to stop school shootings. I can't comprehend how passing out 9mms to elementary school teachers can be considered a positive outcome to this horrible shooting by some people.

I might be able to answer some of your questions, such as why do we have such a high -blam!- side rate? Well yes we are a well developed nation, but that doesn't mean that ALL of the people are. Most of the people that attempt -blam!- sides are outcasts, or rejects of society who are angry, and take it out on the people who mock them, or in some cases innocent people. A good example is the columbine incident back in 2003. The two students who started the shooting were the people who were pushed around on a regular bases. So they started by shooting the kids who mocked them, and then started shooting innocent people. After they were finished, they committed suicide. There was a lesson learned from this experience, dont bully people just because they are different. Also, i agree that giving teachers guns is a terrible idea. If my eighth period teacher had a gun, then half of my class would be dead.
But we've got crazy people here too. And mass shootings are significantly less frequent than in the US.

Interesting read: America's Unwritten Constitution by Akhil Reed Amar.

Our rights are interpreted, not explicitly stated. Great book that talks about it.

No - what he is saying is that a transaction can't be made on private/commercial property - it must be in a government building.

It'll be much harder for psychopaths to casually walk around, gunning down kids, if there are teachers shooting back at him. Unlike police, the teachers are already there and can respond immediately, instead of hiding in a closet as they call 911 and wait until the police to arrive much later.

UK:

Guns are banned unless you have explicit licences explaining that you use them for hunting, farming or sport.

Works so far.
Our cops don't even have guns themselves and we are doing pretty well so far.

Probably the only nation in the world of our size and density to actually pull it off for 300 years. :D

I can only see this working as a short-term fix rather than a long-term solution on the bigger problem.

Will that stop a gunman from shooting up a mall? A park? A local sports field?

Yeah, or you can try and stop the school shootings from happening in the first place.

A good chunk of the developed world has figured that out. The last time Canada had a shooting on school grounds was 2006. You've had five in this year alone.

It's harder when your country is so much bigger, especially when you have Texas (which is also bigger than your country).

The "bigger problem" being untreated mental conditions. There's a reason that these shooters are all depressed loners.

Opposition. These shooters do this for attention--they're going to kill themselves anyway, but by massacring people they go from a nobody that people won't even notice is gone, to someone that has the attention of the whole nation. As a result, they always choose gun free zones, because those are the places where they know there won't be any armed civilians that can oppose them. Schools, the Aurora theatre, that mall a short while ago--these were all gun free zones.

A copy-cat killer tried shooting up a mall, but killed himself as soon as he encountered an armed civilian.

Utah allows concealed carry on school grounds, and they haven't had any massacres.

Prevention only goes so far. It's best to have systems in place that can effectively deal with these shootings once they happen.

There are more problems in addition to gun laws and untreated mental health problems as well. The high crime rate is a problem as well as the availability of illegal weapons, drugs, etc.

I still stand by my opinion that the US needs to improve it's police force in order to have better responses to situations like this; in addition to dealing with the crime and the drugs and the smuggling and whatever else is going on over there.

This. Taking guns away from responsible law-abiding citizens may be bad, but it sure helps A LOT in preventing unnecessary homicides.

A competitive players main goal is to win.
A casuals main goal is to have fun regardless of whether that results in a win or loss.
It has nothing to do with individual skill or knowledge, it has to do with the reason you play.

But 200 years old document says everyone has right to have one!!!111

The biggest help would be abolishing this ridiculous War on Drugs. Following that, we need to get better at dealing with poverty. Those two things alone have a huge number of wide-ranging affects on violent crime rates. But that only really affects violent crime in general; these spree shooters are a special case.

Treating mental conditions is definitely a large factor in these massacres. The example I'm most familiar with is the VT killer; this guy was seriously messed up, and had been that way for years. In regards to treating his condition, the only way to describe it is as criminal neglect. There was no excuse for the way that psychiatrists just ignored his problems.

In America, armed civilians prevent 2 to 7 times more crimes than they cause.

  • 12.16.2012 8:22 AM PDT

Banning guns in America works in theory, but in reality, taking away millions of guns across the nation just won't happen. It's a shame the constitution had to be written with the right to own guns, cause if it wasn't America could be a lot more like other countries.
