I saw the new Superman trailer last night and it struck me. Dexter Morgan's story IS a superhero story. Also, the season finale is tonight and I'm really excited for it, so there's that.

-Orphaned as a child
-Adopted parent tells him to hide his true self from the real world, because they won't accept him
-Constantly trying to find a place for himself in the world
-Leads a double life (Dexter the forensic science prodigy and Dexter the Bay Harbor Butcher)
-Strong moral code (similar to Batman's "NO killing" rule, but it is Harry's Code "Only those proven to be guilty")
-Extraordinary abilities (best forensic tech in Miami, black belt in judo, extremely smart and good at planning, and finally a really good liar and actor to blend in with people)

Wikipedia's list of common superhero traits. Dexter perfectly fits into each of these.

So, what are your thoughts? Is Dexter Morgan just a serial killer, or is he a superhero in the same vein as The Punisher, Batman, and other "mortal" heroes?

He has no superpowers, so obviously not. He's a serial killer.

EDIT: After reading the Wikipedia article, I'd still say no.

Id say hes an Anti-hero

But he only kills people who fit his father's code so they are all bad guys. (at least until we see if he lives up to the Dark Knight quote of "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain")

The Punisher, Iron Man, Captain America, Deadpool, and others kill the bad guys when they do their thing. I think Iron Man killed more people in the first movie than Dexter has killed. Dexter has around 60 total kills by now.

Batman doesn't either I'm pretty sure. He's just rich. (His superpower)

I'd say in a way he is. It's hard to describe him as either good or bad.

Yep, superheros or heros in general do not kill people. Or at least they kill one person because the writers wanted to have them to have more depth, which is extremely over-used now.

Anti-hero indeed.

What's Up.

I like the books better than the show to be honest. Mainly because Dexter's character is much more witty, cleaver, and has a hilarious outlook on life.

OT: I'd say Dexter is an anti-hero and is pretty similar to Deadpool in some ways.

Batman isn't a superhero either. He's just a hero. 'Super' implies superhuman, and Batman is only peak human.

However, peak human is very different in the DCverse.

Online Gaming's pretty much like a zombie movie. There are a lot of mindless idiots roaming around but you find some survivors on the way.

No he's a superhero.

Characters do not strictly require actual superhuman powers to be deemed superheroes. They just have to perform tremendous feats.

I absolutely adore the writers of Dexter.

They make you really consider what is good and evil in this world; right and wrong, truth and lies.

I've never read the books, but I heard that the show is better for the plot. Do you recommend them?

Wikipedia- "Others, like Batman and Spider-Man, are met with public skepticism or outright hostility. A few, such as the X-Men and the characters of Watchmen, defend a populace that almost unanimously misunderstands and despises them."
Dexter fits in with the kind of heroes like X-Men and Watchmen, where the public hates his kind. Like the X-Men, he hunts his own kind (serial killers) while being one of them himself. Superpowers aren't a requirement to be a superhero.

Also, Dexter's skills could very well be considered peak human
