"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle- victorious"

It actually exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed the fight between the pale orc and Thorin (near the end of the film). But I don't get the smeagol scene. According to the Fellowship of the ring, Bilbo gets the ring in a different manner. Can someone explain the inconsistency in the movies? Also, discuss your favourite scenes from the Hobbit.

Did you read the book?

The Bilbo and Gollum scene is actually accurate to the book "The Hobbit," if I remember correctly that portion of the book is called "Riddles in the dark." That was honestly my favorite part of the movie.

I was blown away by it. Much better than expected. Surpassed the first movie in the LoTR trilogy for sure. Bilbo was fantastic.

I've read FoTR, TT and RoTK. But I've never read The Hobbit. Is it any good?

Bungie.Match.com: Our Johnson knows what the ladies like.

The part with Gollum was much the same, although the corridor was completely dark in the book, and Gollum had long since left it. In the movie, it's brighter, and Gollum is still there. In both, Gollum drops the ring.

I did very recently. Yes the movie changes things here and adds/subtracts things there, it still perfectly captures the spirit of the book and the events within.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
-Douglas Adams

The Fellowship of the Ring doesn't explain the whole ring finding event. The one that is in the movie (The Hobbit) is the same as the one in the book (The Hobbit).

The riddle scene was great. Couldn't help but laugh at Smeagol's face. Especially when he was trying conjure an answer.

I was a bit iffy about Azog (the pale orc) surviving the Battle of Azanulbizar, which in the books he was killed at, but knowing what will happen in the following movies I can see how he'll tie all events together.

Its very different, but very good. It lacks the ever present sense of doom that LOTR has but more than makes up for it in sheer charm and warmth.

But you do have to consider the fact that the Hobbit was written for kids. I think that the intended audience for the book kind of took away some of the seriousness of the movie. But it was great nonetheless.

The Desolation of Smaug should be pretty interesting. According to some people, the DoS will include Gimli and Legolas. I'm wondering how they're going to include them into the story.

I've never read the Hobbit but I did enjoy the movie greatly. You could tell it wasn't nearly as dark as LOTR but according to those that have read the book, The Hobbit was more cheery, so it seems fitting.

I loved the scenes that provided historical context (such as Erebor's fall). And in general, I like how Dwarves play such a large role in this movie as opposed to Humans and Elves in LOTR.

Legolas yes but Gimli no. John Rhys-Davies has gone on record saying that he will not play a dwarf again, mainly because the makeup had some nasty health effects on him.

edit: I nerd came in my nerd pants at the mention of The Blue Wizards, Ungoliant, and Gondolin.

Gimli won't be in The Desolation of Smaug, unless some last-minute cameo was thrown in (which I doubt). It's been confirmed that Legolas will be there, though, since he is the son of Thranduil the Elvenking, who the dwarves encounter on their journey to Erebor.

I'm not sure why, but I love how they avoided copyright by having Gandalf forget the names of the Blue Wizards.

I was just looking at the actors in this movie and apparently Orlando Bloom was back. I didn't see him though D:
