"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle- victorious"

I was a bit iffy about Azog (the pale orc) surviving the Battle of Azanulbizar, which in the books he was killed at, but knowing what will happen in the following movies I can see how he'll tie all events together.

The Desolation of Smaug should be pretty interesting. According to some people, the DoS will include Gimli and Legolas. I'm wondering how they're going to include them into the story.

Gimli won't be in The Desolation of Smaug, unless some last-minute cameo was thrown in (which I doubt). It's been confirmed that Legolas will be there, though, since he is the son of Thranduil the Elvenking, who the dwarves encounter on their journey to Erebor.

I remember seeing Gimli's actor (can't remember name) in the production videos. He was carrying a piece of paper, it looked like a script.

I was just looking at the actors in this movie and apparently Orlando Bloom was back. I didn't see him though D:

He should be in the second movie.

Legolas yes but Gimli no. John Rhys-Davies has gone on record saying that he will not play a dwarf again, mainly because the makeup had some nasty health effects on him.

edit: I nerd came in my nerd pants at the mention of The Blue Wizards, Ungoliant, and Gondolin.

I'm not sure why, but I love how they avoided copyright by having Gandalf forget the names of the Blue Wizards.

Copyright issues may have had a factor but the Blue Wizards don't have names that are set in stone.

Yeah, it amazed me. I thought it would be boring and slow, and it's not slow. Good story and awesome places.

They are given names in Unfinished Tales, a book of additional continuity details left out of Tolkien's other works. They are named Alatar and Pallando, but Peter Jackson didn't have the rights to Unfinished Tales, so Gandalf forgets their names.

I agree. Location has always been a priority for Peter Jackson. One of the reasons why LoTR was so successful was because of the awe inspiring locations.

Key

I wish I would've have seen it in 3D. Brad Jones' friend in his review made an excellent point: Peter Jackson is one of the few directions and filmmakers who still uses map paintings, miniatures, on-location shooting, etc. with CGI as an accessory rather than a crutch, and all of that is lost when you see it in 3D.

That amazing ridgeline and fly-by shot in a helicopter he sets up looks like terrible blue screen when you turn it into pointless "atmospheric" 3D.

I really want to see it again in good ol' fashion two dimensions (and higher frame rate).

  • 12.16.2012 11:51 AM PDT

I thought it was amazing honestly. And I cannot wait for the second one.

BTW: Can someone please tell me how The Hobbit managed to get away with a 12+ rating with so many decapitations?

BTW2: I swear I nearly threw up at two scenes. The one whereby the fat goblin with the saggy chin had the saggy chin with the skin breaking and boils and stuff. But moreso with that eccentric wizard with bird faeces on his face. I nearly threw up...

That's the exact reason why I didn't go to the 3D screening. Btw, you should watch it the good ol' fashion way. I can you promise you this, your viewing experience won't be destroyed.

Are we going to see Tom Bombadil in the next one?

I dunno, maybe because 99% of the decapitations were goblins.

I'm surprised they showed Thror's decapitation at the hands of Azog, though.

It wasn't as bloody when compared to the LoTR serious imo.

It had more decapitations though. It played out like 300 really which is rated 15+

No. Tom Bombadil stays in or near the Old Forest, which Thorin and Company are nowhere near at this point.

They didn't. They just showed the head; they didn't show the removal of it. I was still surprised when that other dude sliced off that creature's hand and there was blood squirting out of it. That was intense...

Still, it was some pretty savage imagery. Not as savage as in the book, though, where Azog carved his name into Thror's forehead.

That's nothing. In the extended edition of RoTK, they actually showed Aragon slicing that guy's head near the Black Gate.

The movie was a pretty big letdown IMO.

Please elaborate as to why.

To summarize my feelings:

1. It was extremely childish compared to LotR.
2. Everything could talk.
3. There was so much redundant crap that seemed like it was only added to prolong the film.
4. The CGI was bad.
5. Radagast the Brown

I could say so much more. The only thing I really liked was the acting. Compared to the previous movies, it just felt wrong.

Stop comparing it to LoTR; it's completely different from LoTR so stop comparing it to it. Seriously; it's completely and utterly different. I like it really. I didn't find it childish at all and it was funny in places and moody in others. The CGI doesn't matter and the film felt awesome. It didn't feel prolonged at all. I can't honestly see why one would not like this film. I know it's not like LoTR; but it's not meant to be like LoTR...

1. That's how The Hobbit was written. If you expected the same tone as The Lord of the Rings, it's natural that you'd be disappointed.
2. You should read the book. Even more creatures were talking, in one way or another.
3. Redundant how?
4. It wasn't bad, it was just a bit excessive.
5. I'll admit, they made his character a bit too over-the-top...

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

I thought it was amazing. It expanded the book and more.

The Riddles in the Dark piece was really well done, partly down to Gollums amazing new realism.

It's just like in the book but in the book it was utterly pitch black.
