Subject: Should forum copping be bannable?

It gets really annoying when people get on threads only to post completely irrelevant to the topic.

Now, if say someone posts off-topic in the Reach forum, a friendly "This should go on the Flood forum dude", is completely alright, and that should be encouraged. (Older members teaching newer ones).

What I'm talking about is more about people who go on threads just to post annoying, off-topic things, such as:

"inb4 lock and ban"
"So what are we discussing?"

How is saying "inb4lock" or "What are we discussing?" trying to help?

Bye.

There's a difference between helping and desperately trying to get the attention of the moderators. As far as I'm aware it's not a bannable offense unless it's considered spam.

  • 12.16.2012 1:02 PM PDT

Maybe they're just trying to be helpful by pointing out that a post is against the rules, or in the wrong forum, etc.

I posted this in your thread on The Flood.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

That isn't really considered forum copping, IMO. I would definitely consider it spam though. But it also depends on what the thread is about. Contributing to spam is considered a bannable offense so maybe.

No, people asking "So what are we discussing?" is usually a sign of a bad thread. You should take that as a friendly advice. Also, people telling that you are possible breaking the rules is just a friendly advice as well.

Or are you suggesting that instead of caring about the rules everyone should just join the stupidness?

  • 12.16.2012 1:02 PM PDT

I always thought the "inb4" were banable? Usually those type of responses are considered spam and contributing to spam.

Let me break this down.

inb4lock: At times, it can be used to metaphorically battle a troll.

What are we discussing?: If a thread has no discussion value, or if what is supposed to be discussed is not clear, this can help.

How can you justify your constant spamming of "So what are we discussing?", Mythical Wolf?

It's spam. Plain and simple. And if you're posting it on threads with no discussion value, you're promoting it and therefore bumping spam threads, which is bannable.

If the thread is that bad, it should be reported, and that's it. Posting spam like "so what are we discussing" brings up the topic, meaning it's contributing to spam.

Yeah, that's fine. I'm talking about people posting "What are we discussing" and the like on thread.s

That's not Forum Copping, that's (unfortunately) typical Posting Behavior.

No, thread is supposed to be reported if it's against the rules. Bad threads necessarily aren't.

I have to admit that "new threads should promote discussion" isn't the clearest possible rule.

That's what the report function is for.

  • 12.16.2012 1:16 PM PDT

I notice a problem with The Flood where they don't report rule breaking posts unless it's either really stupid or a shock image. Any other time it's rule breaking they just add fuel to the fire and argue in it. Leaving me the only person who reported the thread.

I only notice that in The Flood though, really annoying still....

You're confusing two different things together. Saying "inb4" is spam and offers no contribution to the discussion. This also includes:

-OP is X
-0/10
-nou
-TL;DR
-Simply quoting any of the above statements with nothing else is contributing to spam.
-Or any variations of the above posts

I personally report every one of these posts along with a few other handfuls of users I have discussed this exact topic with. Those are all spam posts, they contribute nothing. If a user doesn't have anything to add to a conversation, why post at all?

Now, when a user posts "what are we discussing here?", obviously the person is asking a question simply because the OP designed a poorly thought out thread and it's actually difficult to understand what they're suppose to be discussing. By posting this, you're acknowledging that it's unclear what the specific topic is and giving the OP a second chance at explaining their claim.

Should forum copping be bannable?

-If the person is using logical thought in their post with evidence and making sure they dot their "I's" and cross their "T's" (by staying in the forum rules), no they shouldn't be banned. After all they aren't breaking any rules.

I have to disagree with that. Sometimes you just see a post that you completely agree with, so what's the actual point of trying to say the exact same thing but just in other words? Quoting may not add anything new, but at least it shows what you think and overall it will affect the discussion, when people see lots of users agreeing with something.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.
