Subject: Can anyone here read Japanese?

Please do not send me group invites.

A buddy of mine is deployed in Japan right now, and posted a picture of him holding this sign. What does it say?

Did you know that 93% of all statistics on the internet are made up on the spot, and that 68% of readers believe them?

No clue.

"Your eyes are full of hate, forty-one. That's good. Hate keeps a man alive. It gives him strength"

I can read it, but I'm not sure what it means. The large part says MIKIO. The characters are katakana which is the alphabet for foreign words and often times products or companies. So I would say its probably the name of something based on where he is, I could be wrong though

EDIT: The character on the top right there is the kanji for Top or Above, what it means when combined with the other one, I do not know

So you assume that a majority American and British forum is somehow going to know how to sight read Japanese kanji?
Worth a shot. So many people here are into anime and such; they might know Japanese.

It is possible, but he would have a better chance going to a more Japanese oriented forum.

Talking about Sweden is an ultrabannable offense.

Too bad being completely and utterly wrong isn't a bannable offense.

Here you go OP.

I thought it was a name as well.

Okay well that equal looking think is the number 3. I actually should have gotten that after all the Bleach I watch. Well hell, someone beat me to it.

It's not, it looks similar to the character for three but its not the same. The character for three has a long line on top and bottom and a shorter line in the middle, the one you see is the katakana character for MI. I'd also like to point out that we're viewing the reverse side of the flag, so everything is backwards

Thanks guys.
I think it has something to do with Mikio Shimoji. Maybe they're having elections or something?

looks like you're probably right, the kanji on the top of the flag match up, and it used to be that males would write their names in katakana because the sharper lines were considered more masculine, so that probably explains that.

Yup.

The first bit at the top is kanji which I can't direct you to assistance with, but the last 3 characters should be easy to find with a Katakana chart.

The kanji to start is '[shita]' which means below; 'ue' is above. If you were to flip the kanji upside down it would be 'ue'.

However everything else about what you said is right. My guess is that he's written part of his name in Katakana for easier recognition. I'll have to ask my sensei about it. It'll be interesting to know why he did that.

Nice. I'm currently in my second semester of Japanese. My final, oddly enough, is on Wednesday. It wouldn't happen to be your major would it?

Computer science actually, I don't intend on staying at my current college so I'm only taking what interests me rather than the required courses.
