Let me start off by saying this. I did my homework before buying the Surface. I looked at all the other tablets that were out there already or were about to come out. Samsung, Apple, Google, you name it. I wanted to be sure that I was getting the right thing FOR ME before dropping 600+ dollars on a tablet. After a lot of consideration and research, the Surface RT became the obvious choice for the following reasons.
USB port
micro HDMI port
micro SDXC slot
Built in kickstand
Windows 8 OS
Desktop app with Internet Explorer 10 (yes I use IE and I'm proud of it!)
Office 2013 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) - When the final version of 2013 comes out I will be able to upgrade the preview version I have now to the full version for free. that's $150 right there that I don't have to worry about.
I bought my Surface with the Type Cover Keyboard because I wanted something that had actual buttons on it and it works great.
As a college student I looked at what the tablet market had to offer and Microsoft got me early on simply for the fact that I can do all the note taking and slide show making that I need on the Surface that I am currently typing this with right now. Office beats any note taking app no questions asked. The app store is small because it's new and it hasn't really bothered me that much since I don't use a lot of frivolous apps to begin with. The ONLY thing that I want on this that I don't have is iTunes and I've managed okay without since I still have my laptop to fall back on. These are my thoughts and opinions but if you want something other than Apple or Android that's fresh and new then I would definitely recommend getting a Windows 8 tablet. Best $600 I've spent so far.
