So I've been using a punching bag for some weeks now, and I feel empowered as -blam!-. I walk down the street feeling like I can defend myself, even though I'd probably still get my ass beat by someone stronger, I feel more confident that I can handle myself. If people look at me funny, I stare them the -blam!- down giving them the "the -blam!- you lookin at?" look because I feel like I can take em. Haven't had any jokers trying to escalate things further yet.

Sure it doesn't teach you how to fight, but it certainly helps build up other areas and you get practice with fighting, even if it's not real. Plus it's not bad exercise.

I know everything, I've just forgotten most of it.

Also, my XBL Gamertag is 'Wenggh', not 'A Stolen Fruit'.

Pssh, I already do Martial Arts.

Got that right.

I don't look at guys funny. If I see someone looking at me, I look back at them and if their look is hostile, I stare them down until they look away.

"Your eyes are full of hate, forty-one. That's good. Hate keeps a man alive. It gives him strength"

lol, it gets you zero practice with fighting. An inanimate object is no substitute for moving human being

my family used to have a boxing bag, and some bees made a nest in it, and then I layed into it with my fists and the bees attacked me. the end.

Feeling empowered when you're not is a hazard. I myself don't want to feel something I don't have, nor will feeling empowered help me whilst I stroll down the lane; if someone looks at me I look back, smile, and maybe wave if it's a pretty face ;>

It does help with fighting, I'm sure. Builds up speed, endurance, even pain resistance. I remember my hands hurting first time not using gloves, but now I can use it without gloves sometimes without pain.

Plus, how many people do you think regularly practice swinging their arms hitting something? Not many. You have an advantage because you're building up your own experience using those muscles and when it comes to fighting time, things should just come naturally. The only thing I feel like it doesn't help much with is defending yourself.

Well in addition to the punching, I do other maintenance things and I feel pretty fit. Certainly helps when you're walking outside and don't have to resort to putting your head down because you're nervous or scared. If I walk past a group of intimidating people, I just walk by not giving a -blam!- unlike other people who just pull out their phone or pretend they're looking at something else.

I'm glad it's boosted your confidence but don't fool yourself into thinking you're any more prepared to fight someone that you were without it.

I'm sure it's made me more prepared, in addition to the other stuff I've been doing. I know I can't beat up everyone I see but I feel sure of myself that I can bring something to the table if I ever get into a brawl. I'm not looking for fights but if it happens, then I'm going to defend myself.

Ah I new this thread was going to be funny when I saw the title and the OP's name.

OT: Nah I would rather learn more useful self defense skills that just punching a punching bag.

Well if you're not doing any of them, why not do at least take some kind of action? Sure it's better to learn martial arts or actual fighting techniques than using a punching bag, but don't be so ignorant to think a punching bag wouldn't do no good. And if anything, it certainly keeps you in shape if you do a good routine.

Why do you think that?

There just aren't enough moments in the day to rectify the wrongs of the past.

I've been meaning to get one to help reduce stress, but im still working on it.

There are better things to invest time and money into than a punching bag. I never said it wouldn't be useful, but from what I can tell based on your OP you think it helps you immensely in a fight. Really it doesn't if you haven't been in a fight before and due to how it is an inanimate object. As for keeping in shape again there are better ways to do that than punching a punching bag.

Why do you think that?

Because I notice how the bag reacts to certain punches. Sometimes the force is stronger when I position my arm in a certain way, so I know how to cause more damage if I have to. Plus it definitely upped my speed and endurance.

Probably that if not worse. Based on the OP it is glaringly obvious he has never been in a fight before in his life.

Doesn't matter if you don't have any fight experience along with the lack of mindset.

Don't be such a debbie downer pessimistic -blam!-.
"Oh there are better things you can do". You're at least doing something if you previously weren't doing anything before...I'm not going to invest my time/money in a martial arts class, I have school and I like doing things on my own time.

I already don't have a good opinion of you. You're the guy that lied to me saying he was beast at Gears of War 3 saying you could kick my ass or what not, but then when time came and I asked you to play a match against me, you -blam!-ed out.

We all have school so that really isn't a good excuse. As for your opinion of me my statement hasn't changed you are still bad compared to me at Gears. I wouldn't say I pussied out just I viewed it to be not worth my time.
