Ok CS, read the freaking books. In First Strike, which took place before Halo 2, the covenant both already knew the location of Earth, and Col Ackerson was accounted for before the covenant was going to attack Earth, which means he couldn't have gotten the coordinates to them. Anyway, factor in the likelyhood that the covenant would kill him if he tried to communicate with them. Factor in that When atacking Earth, the covenant would probably kill him along with everyone else, and factor in the fact that he probably ralized all this, it is unlikely that Ackerson told the covenant where Earth is.
It's actually not a bad theory, considering the others I've seen, but it probably wouldn't work. Ackersons a psycho but not that much of a psycho.
Also in first Strike, it is stated that the covenant already has a large scale digging machine, and its not a Scarab. Anyway, imagine a few, or even a few hundred scarabs trying to uncover that giant forrunner artifact. It's around 2 - 3 kilometers wide, and the covenant have to uncover this in mabye 2 weeks. The scarabs wouldnt have a chance.
