As awesome Fraps is, it just craps out my FPS.

Was trying to record some League of Legends gameplay. I can play the game maxed out at 60 FPS. As soon as I start recording using Fraps, my FPS dropped dramatically down to 15-20 FPS.

Is there any way I can fix this?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

I use Bandicam and have had no problems so far.

  • 12.17.2012 11:04 AM PDT

Get a better GPU/CPU/more RAM.

Most obvious ways.

Maybe try updating your Graphics Card Drivers.
Try recording at a lower quality.

I am a Floodian

I know that's a common problem with Fraps, but I don't know what the solution is.

I have Bandicam as well....I love it...but my main problem that I have with it is that for me to record with, the program has to be windowed....and then of course there's the 10 minute cap...and I want to record a whole game of LoL in one segment. I already have Fraps registered...so ya...

That's basically unavoidable. Try tweaking the FRAPS recording settings. Are you recording at full res? Half res? 30 or 60 fps?
Lower its demand on your hardware.

I have it recording at 30 FPS for full size. Honestly...i'm not entirely sure what this means. Can you explain it to me please?

If you have some free time and don't mind, please check out my Youtube channel, and maybe subscribe? I'd appreciate it.

My fraps downs Saints Row The Third from 60 frames to 30. Doesn't matter. I lock it at 30 anyways, 30 frames per second is good enough for Youtube.

YouTube can only display 30 FPS anyways on all resolutions.

You will -blam!- bricks when you see what game it is! =)

Port the games engine int id Tech 4, problem solved. John Carmack's magic solves all of the problems.

Full size recording is redundant. Try half size, that alone should halve the performance deficit.

Upgrading the GPU won't help as much as upgrading CPU due to the fact that Fraps uses the CPU to collect the correct frames and sample them within a single file, similar to video rendering in movie programs. RAM won't do much justice either. Recording at lower frames like you said is recommended, collecting 24 frames within a second is the best choice for movies.

Moving on to the OP, Fraps does not really have many options when it comes to recording unless you have the paid version. So I recommend you using another program. I don't have much insight on free programs but you could Google and see if you find anything else.

I recommend MSI afterburner though as it's free and useful with other tools too.

Ok....thanks.

Will it still record at 1080p at 30 FPS or higher if I do half size?

Hey actually...I just thought of an alternative to Fraps. MSI Afterburner. It has a built in FPS counter and a screen recorder (for games and whatnot...like Fraps).

Now...I dunno if MSI Afterburner huts your FPS hard or not. If somebody knows...please let me know.

Well, everything that's recording 1080p at a 30fps rate or higher will hurt your fps, fraps only does it so badly due to it's extremely large file sizes, if you could film in a 20 second video and check if the files aren't too large then your recording program probably won't slow down your game too much

What game are you playing?

And why do you even game with a laptop? That's like not lifting but in the gaming world.

Believe it or not, the 460M is kind of a bad graphics card today and your CPU would be better of with a higher clock speed because I think Fraps utilizes only one core at max but that can probably be changed with settings.

A fast external Hard Drive might help (SATA3 connected) your problem as Fraps writes its files directly to the Hard Drive and not the RAM or Graphics memory. And bandwidth that way is strictly limited by the write speed and the transfer rate.

This laptop model is back from 2010...ya...it's out dated...I know. The 460M in today's standards is considered a low end GPU.

And just saying....but i'm building a desktop very, very soon. I have all of my parts except for my GPU...which i'm getting in a few days. Super excited!

Half size means half the resolution you're playing at. You're playing on a gaming laptop, so maintaining steady FPS at 1080p is strain enough without recording at the same time.

You need a considerably more powerful rig -- a desktop -- if you want to fluidly record 1080p.

Ok...so just with half size enabled...I am playing at 1080p...but Fraps is actually recording at 720p?

Nice! I'm building one too. I'm currently stuck on a AMD Anthlon x2 at 2.8 Ghz oc'd to 3.1 but at least my HD 7950 is doing its job.

You can imagine how I feel about my computer.
