Congratulations, OP. Although this phone reminds me of the HTC Rezound... and we both know how that turned out. Unfortunately, developers and the Android community aren't too fond of Verizon, so it might have limited support when rooting/flashing/customizing if you're into that sort of thing. But hey, hope you enjoy it.
And as for rooting...to me knowledge it is OK to root your phone, but it WILL void your warranty.

Rooting is just a fancy word for flashing a custom firmware onto your device. It's pretty easy, but just double check that whatever ROM you use is fully compatible with your device to prevent instability.
