I read a lot about FPS games becoming stale, about an over saturation and lack of innovation. I understand the over saturation part, everyone wants to make the next CoD, but what I'm not understanding is the "lack of innovation" criticism.

What exactly is there to innovate in a FPS that has not already been done?

Enemy AI being something more than bullet magnets with accuracy and damage values adjusted by difficulty.

Although, I wouldn't complain that FPS are becoming less "innovative". Instead they are becoming much more standardized.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

This is probably the best example given as an answer to this question.

That's about it too. The remaining mechanics are already in place. People always talk about how stale CoD is, but none ever say what they could really improve on. The truth is that CoD is about as good as you can get, gameplay wise.

Oh god, no! There is more to FPSs than just scoping and running.

Yeah, there's also knifing and killstreaks!

I don't actually know what can be added, or better yet changed that would make it different.

I don't think there's anything to add indeed, but recently it has come to my attention every game developper is going for CoD style with killstreaks and perks etc., resulting in the fps genre going steep down the hill.

It's a pretty narrow medium. That's the problem with that genre.

Exactly. Its becoming the same thing. Its becoming stale because nothing new comes out of it.

Liked someone mentioned, if they can make a fun FPS where the placement of the shot actually matters then, maybe it'll be taken to a new direction.

Pretty much, get shot in the leg? Start limping, get shot in the leg 30 times? Start crawling. As long as you don't get shot in a vital area, then your still up and shooting. Pretty much, make it more realistic. At least for where you get shot and what happens next.

If no company takes that road, then FPS will be pretty much the same. The only thing that will change is the pace of the game.

Indeed, games like BL2 and FC3 have certainly done some interesting things, though.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Thats what they said back in the day with Goldeneye. We just lack the creativity/imagination to think outside the box. Its all become too standarized.

I've also thought about this. Games like Fallout 3 and New Vegas pulled this off, though there would be a need of tweaks to the idea.
For instance, you could have medical stations positioned around the map (minimum of 5 for a 10 player game, so that camping isn't too big of an issue) that will repair the wound and send you back. Or, there could be a loadout perk where you carry a med pack with you that can temporarily heal flesh wounds or stave off death until you can get to a med center.

The problem with the FPS genre is there is only so much you can do with it. It's like with 2D platformers, they eventually become stale unless you get really creative with the way the fundamental mechanics work, with level design, etc. The problem is that most FPS's try to emulate the COD formula: urban middle eastern modern setting with modern guns and jelly-on-screen-so-real recharging health mechanics. Of all the FPS's in the last three years, the only game that really did that setting well was Spec Ops, and that was because it was a deconstruction of the genre.

An FPS doesn't just have to be about constant shooting. Look at Metroid Prime, combat is far from an important part outside boss battles. Exploration, immersion and environments are the key factors in that game. That's innovation within the genre, and more games should use it as an example. FPS games have the opportunity to create really memorable personal storytelling experiences but are generally confined to extremely generic action settings with little depth, because that's what sells.
