Subject: How do we end bullying?

Major props to my hommie Sheeef. He made Recon possible for me. Long time recovering emails and passwords. And it was his. lol.

Raise yo kids better. TV is an issue with how they act.
They watch, the learn, they do.

There is absolutely nothing than can be done. Bullying is going to happen no matter what solutions we come up with that we think are going to solve the problem. A-hole kids are still going to find a way around it.

Well at my school 2 years ago a kid killed himself because of bullying. It changed everyone's attitude towards that subject and you see the difference among the Seniors/Juniors who went through that, vs the Freshmen/Sophomores who weren't around. Although it shouldn't take an experience to make a difference. Kids need to learn to speak up, the help is out there.

Weak children need to be taught to stand up to them. A bully isn't a bully if no-ones gives a damn about him, they're like physical trolls really. If everyone could stand up to them they wouldn't bother, it's our sheltered society thats bringing about this weakness and dependance on adults.

I would argue that it's zero tolerance policies against fighting in schools playing too big of an effect.

Consider this: a bully (who likely doesn't care about his standing in school) targets someone who likely does care about their standing in school. The "good kid" will continue to endure the bully's attacks because he or she does not want to get in trouble. They deal with it until they snap, causing harm to themselves or others.

Administrators either need to get rid of the lazy zero tolerance policies on fighting and actually pay attention who is bullying who, or they need to just let kids fight it out themselves.

I got into a handful of scraps throughout middle school, junior high, and high school. Win or lose, the person who was antagonizing me left me alone. In fact, I'm friends with a handful of them.

Kids are smarter and can deal with problems better than adults give them credit for, sometimes.

Letting kids fight it out is a bad idea. It leads to questions of neglect (where were the teachers in all this?) when someone gets injured. I'm betting that your "scraps" had nothing to do with the kind of bullying that we're talking about. Not that it matters, because anecdotal evidence is not evidence at all anyway.

But we're not talking about fighting, we're talking about bullying. Bullying often takes forms that aren't physical at all, and if kids really could deal with those problems we wouldn't be talking about them here.

Why not just sit back and let kids socially grow and get over it. Sure if they bring it to an adult and have the bully suspended for a day or two but expulsion should carry a larger crime then getting in a stupid fist fight over a kid stealing another's lunch. If we try and shelter children too much they will become socially inept and will not know how to handle the cold real world.

People need more sense. They sit there and swallow it in or try to leave asap. Or come up with an excuse to leave. Or hold it in until they get home.

When you were a kid and you first heard thunder, didn't you try to close your ears to the sound? Shut your eyes? Drown it out with music? Singing?

Of course, this won't really help in a public area. Nor will it do anything about physical abuse. If it's physical abuse, then they should definitely be expelled/arrested.

I'd suggest trying out online classes. In my case, I only have to come into class once a week for progress or for tests. It was much better learning experience, though the propensity for slacking off is much greater.

You just need to instill the fact that it's not nice to repeatedly harass another.

Also, there needs to be more parental and faultily involvement in bulling.

Here's the problem with bullying. Nobody besides the victim know what exactly is going on in their life.

-Victim-The victim might have family issues or mental issues effecting them that doesn't allow them to fight back. They don't want to get in trouble because overall they are the more mature ones then the bully themselves. The problem comes from that in school the ratio of maturity to immaturity is lopsided. Most kids are immature in school let it be because their parents never punished them for wrong doings or never care to watch over them and guide them. There's a lot of issues that could be involved. This causes the whole bully/victim scenario.

So, the victim can't get their frustration out and shootings happen. It's when they snap that suicides or shootings happen.

-Bully-
The bully most likely bullies because they are insecure about themselves and parents most likely take things out on them so to get their anger out they let it loose on the kids mentioned above. To feel wanted the bully attacks others to appear tough but on the inside these people are most likely torn apart from their own issues. Issues could be anything from harassment, money, parents, etc for both sides.

The teachers can't punish because of laws and the bullies parents most likely don't punish their kids and instead let them run free. The answer to fix the question is ultimately the parents need to guide their kids. Tell them no once in awhile and not spoil them. That's for both sides.

I think family issue/mental health can be the root of bullying, perhaps these need to be looked at more closely. In terms of physical bullying, I'd beat their ass if the problem consisted.

there is a problem, and all we need to do to stop it is let the kids sort it out on their own, and only intervene when it's a group of people fighting 1 kid, or once someone hits the ground if it gets to the point of fighting.

yes, it sounds barbaric but parents/teachers intervening just causes the kid being picked on to have a harder time. intervening just causes the pain the kid's going through to double and it really doesn't help at all.

Well there's my two cents take it as what you will.

DEAR GOD NO, parents and faculty involvement just pisses the bully off more and causes more harm to the kids.

More action from school teachers/administration

I don't think you can. The only people who can stop it are the victims.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

You really can't. Kids will always be kids. There will always be hurtful words on the playground.

The better question to ask is, how do we limit bullying so that kids don't commit suicide over it?

  • 12.17.2012 5:15 PM PDT

From my experiences in school, 0 tolerance policy ends up "It was just a joke" and everything blows over. No real punishment for the bully, social excommunication for the bullied, and no more bullying for the bullied because they know hes got the balls to report them.
0 tolerance policy can also be a double edged sword. Very easy to frame an adversary.

I think the parents should be more involved and tell their kids before they go to school that if anybody gives them crap let them know. Sometimes, fighting back isn't the best option. It can make things worse. That being said so can the parents talking about it.

Here is my take on it: You can never stop bullying or things like murder, theft, etc. These things will always happen unless you have a perfect society, but that isn't going to happen.
