Subject: Just got 2x 8GB RAM sticks

Just got 2x 8GB RAM sticks that I am going to install into my computer. I'll have a total of 20GB of RAM now since I currently have 4GB already that is compatible with my new 16GB.

I know a decent amount about computers but can someone tell me this:

If I have more RAM, will it just allow games to load/run faster or will it allow me to also boost the graphics capabilities slightly more without performance drop?

I know it mainly depends on the graphics card but still.

I'm asking based on others' personal experiences. If they have ever been able to run games on higher visual settings than normal after upgrading RAM without performance loss.

Are you rendering Pixar films or something?

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

- "Cross of Iron"

You realize games only use 4 normally right?

It will help a little but performance still relies way more on GPU and processor power.

I got these cheeseburgers man....

I don't think you do know a lot, but...

No, it will not load games faster, depending on RAM speed, you may get 1-2 more FPS, but nothing more.

You'll just get a little better loading times and a bit better frame rates.

TBH, 20GB is overkill. The most you really need for games is 8GB.

You won't be able to go from "high" to "ultra" just because you added more RAM. It will not load games faster if they are completely closed.

20GB is complete overkill. Even 12 is overkill

Nope. I got the RAM as an early Christmas present from someone who's going out of town for the holidays. I don't need 20GB obviously but I'll be set for a good while.

I've got 16 gigs of RAM, and I constantly brag about it to my friends =P

  • 12.17.2012 6:55 PM PDT

Dear god, 20GB of RAM? what're you doing, making the next Avatar?

and no, RAM has virtually no effect on games, it only helps out with videos and rendering bro.

Your computer will be completely outdated by the time you need half of that

Obviously, but I can upgrade the other components. This computer is already 2 1/2 years old.

You, I don't like you.

You'll be running Oprah Winfrey on ultra with that kind of RAM.

You're going to buy a completely new build.

For gaming you only need at the most 6GB. You have the amount used for high-stress scientific simulations and multi media production and video game making.

Also, is your OS 32 or 64 bit?

64 bit, duh. Win7 Pro 32-bit can only support 4GB max.

"You get what you put into it."

When Legendary is too mainstream, you have Heroic. When you're the leader of the church of MLGeezus, have Epic in your username, and can't write 'About Me's' to save your life, what do you get?

This guy. And now, an side note: Most things I post contain lethal doses of sarcasm, so be warned, and try not to take me seriously.

Finally, a message to Bungie trolls everywhere.

Alright, I lol'd.

OT: Like everyone else so far has said, 20GB of RAM is beyond too much. Maybe look into GPU or stuff of that sort.

I know, I was making sure you aren't just trying to do the impossible.

Is your cpu even able to handle that much ram?

Actually, what I would like to upgrade next is my Graphics Card. Mine is already 2 1/2 years old and it wasn't the top of the line at it's time either. It was really good but there were still lots better than it.

I make use of my 16 gb. By that, I mean having ~70 tabs open on chrome.

Hello.

Random Access Memory is mainly for loading speeds, along with your HDD's RPM. Most of the graphic mounting is on your CPU/GPU.
