Subject: Just got 2x 8GB RAM sticks

I have 36 Gb(I do alot of rendering with 3ds max, udk, Cry eninge3, etc) and no you will not see a major performance boost. You might as well have used the money you paid for the RAM to get a better GPU or CPU.

ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY CHROME.

You won't notice any difference, unless you decide to make your computer a server.

Also, as far as I know, RAM only works in like pairs correct? So using those 8gb sticks is fine, but you can't use them with the 4gb you already have in there.

Anything past 8GB RAM is useless for gaming. Even 8 is unnecesary.

Its all about the RAM speed and the GPU/CPU clock speed. You shoulda invested that money you spent on ram into a badass graphics card

Actually, I can. It's two 2x 2GB sticks currently in that are compatible with my 2x 8GB sticks.

More ram should give you more headroom to overclock your CPU which will effect gaming.

The graphics card has it's own ram though, so more ram won't help it.

Remember those times when we all had something better to be doing, but didn't do it? Those were good times. Gooood times

*pats ops shoulder*
You just wasted a lot of money. You will see little to no improvement, and I hope that you know you will need a 64 bit operating system to run that amount of RAM. Whats more, there is a high chance that your motherboard will support that much RAM. (ex: my previous motherboard couldn't support more than 2 gb).
If you want to see a performance boost that isn't loading times you should have gotten a better video card(higher quality visuals) or processor(general speed increase on everything). The RAM might make up for your graphics card where its lacking, but there would be a MAJOR drop in frame rate.

Lol, op is noob.

I download my RAM.

If I haven't fired you yet, it's because I'm still firing your mom in bed.

Instead of moar ram, invest that money in getting BETTER ram. That's how you alleviate ram bottlenecks.

I'll have a total of 20GB of RAM now

You're silly.

I've got 16 gigs of RAM, and I constantly brag about it to my friends =P

lol, why? RAM is dirt cheap and easy as hell to install. That's like bragging about being able to put your pants on correctly in one try.

Why didn't you just download more ram instead?

Nah, you can use different capacities as long as the clock speed is the same. (Some mobos allow differing clock speeds and will just clock the speed down to the lowest stick(s).) You just can't run multi-channel unless the sticks are identical.

It will not increase FPS, nor allow you to run at higher settings. You can simply run more applications at one time. That's it.

In fact, having more than 8GB can actually slow your computer down, as can having non-matching RAM sticks, as the CAS latencies and timings would be different.

What brand and speed of RAM did you get? You might as well link the page.

Uhh... What?

More RAM = more voltage sent to the DIM slots = less voltage for the CPU.

you have three slot thingys for ram that i find doubtful, however it should allow a performance increase in visuals

  • 12.17.2012 10:06 PM PDT

You better close this sig when your done.

I've got 16gb of RAM in my computer. Its only really useful if you're doing a lot of video editing.

4gb is fine I'd recommend 8 just to be safe and only get more than that if you actually do video editing.

No, get a SSD if you want faster loading times. RAM stands for Random Access Memory meaning it only temporarily stores memory of the program till the computer is shut off. Anything over 8 is used for programs like After Effects and Photoshop.. But I believe there is a way to partition part of your RAM to certain programs but once it's allocated that partitioned amount cannot be used by the computer for short term memory unless the partition is deleted so if you have 20 and you partition 4GB it will basically be like you having 16GB of RAM.

It will let you run more programs at a time but even for that you have too much. 4 GB is honestly fine. 8 is more than enough for sure, unless you're making a supercomputer with multiple processors for processing data (like protein folding stuff, etc.).

  • 12.17.2012 10:18 PM PDT

RAM is dirt cheap so at least you didn't waste much money, OP. Still though, you are an idiot.

No.

It's clear from your posts that you in fact do not.

blarg.

Fast RAM will benefit you more than the quantity of RAM you have for game loading times.

20GB is complete overkill, with most gaming PC's not needing more than 6-8GB (if you're video/image editing, using a CAD program etc it's a different story), as most programs these days aren't going to utilize it.

Skyrim, a huge open world game, will only use 2GB of memory, and unless it's relatively fast RAM in the 1600 MHz range (timings these days are all pretty fast) it won't even matter that much. Programs like Photoshop will use more, but only if you have a 64 bit system.

But RAM is cheap, so it's not that bad idea to get more if programs in the future manage RAM better.

Just got 2x 8GB RAM sticks that I am going to install into my computer. I'll have a total of 20GB of RAM now since I currently have 4GB already that is compatible with my new 16GB.

I know a decent amount about computers but can someone tell me this:

If I have more RAM, will it just allow games to load/run faster or will it allow me to also boost the graphics capabilities slightly more without performance drop?

I know it mainly depends on the graphics card but still.
Yes and no. Yes it improves performance but your system can only use so much ram. You WILL NEVER use 20 gb of ram playing games. You need to be doing intense video editing to use near 20gb. Also you do not know a decent amount about computers if you do not know how ram operates.
