Just a question to think about:

What is the definition of a "good" rapper?

Also...

What is the definition of a good instrumentalist/vocalist?

Don't punch a British kid, the queen'll come after you.

Both genres take entirely different forms of talent.

  • 12.18.2012 8:31 AM PDT

Oh look, a Floodian bashing music they could never dream of creating.

How unusual.

Metal is often incredibly talented stuff, and I'm sure rap can be as well, even IF I'm not into the genre myself. Get your act together, OP, because it sure as hell isn't making you look cool.

Metal

Rap takes more talent though

I'll give you the definition of a good instrumentalist: it's someone who is competent in the workings of his/her trained instrument. They understand their basic music structure and has a sound knowledge of the techniques used to play their instrument as well as a brief grasp on things such as scales. I'd also say a brief understanding of musicology in relation to the instrument.

The biggest thing I stress is that an instrumentalist isn't necessarily a musician. A musician is a person skilled at making music; someone who understands music as an entity and not just as an instrument or particular sound.
That's where most metal bands fall; they have great guitarists who are incredibly fast, but can only write (musically) simple songs. Death metal is a great example of this.

  • 12.18.2012 8:36 AM PDT

Both genres obviously require different kinds of talent, but i think it takes much more effort to make a metal song that it is to make a rap.

That said, I enjoy rap more than metal these days.

  • 12.18.2012 8:37 AM PDT

I listen to Metal almost exclusively, but both do take talent if Rap is done right.

It comes down to a personal preference. You see, the way I view metal is that there are a lot of chaotic chords, with a pentameter overarching in most songs. While this does take talent to actually play, I would like to state something else;

A lot of rap artiest have various rhythms and chord structures. In fact, Google search Frank Ocean. This man has pure talent, and yes, he is a rap artiest. Though his latest work is R&B, it just goes to show that rap artiest are not limited to one thing, whereas a metal head will stick to what they know for as long as they are recording.

The true qualities of a good rapper are;

~Good at making beats that are unique and fun to listen to
~Quality lyrics, using all sorts of interesting word functions
~Great stylistic representation of who they are in relation to their product
~Unique style within the genre of Rap, creating their own little notch in the world.

It depends.

Tupac has more talent than any modern Death Metal band. Yet Pantera has more talent on their worst day than any modern rapper on their best.

I guess what I am trying to say is that most of the current generation's music sucks, and 90's master race.

So you're saying that Tupac took more talent than This?

So are you saying that someone who plays in an orchestra is not a musician?

Also the definition I was looking for is way simpler: some one who can learn a new piece quickly.

'because metal sounds like crap.'

Please tell us about all the different sub genres of metal you've explored.

To claim a genre as diverse as metal can collectively sound like crap shows either a lack of knowledge or poor taste.

OT: People who play instruments > People who say words

No discredit to good rap artists but a collaboration of people who play instruments well is infinitely more impressive than well written lyrics that flow well. Nice as it is, let's not pretend that rap demands more musical talent and knowledge.

What have you been listening to??? If you're not into metal, the only way you're going to hear it is through the mainstream. Currently, mainstream stuff is really bad for metal.
A lot of rap artiest have various rhythms and chord structures.
And metal singers don't? Layne Staley had one of the most -blam!- powerful voices in the universe.
Though his latest work is R&B, it just goes to show that rap artiest are not limited to one thing, whereas a metal head will stick to what they know for as long as they are recording.

A lot metalheads do a bunch of blues as well. Some even do rap.

A bit hypocritical there? You give examples of good rappers, but compare them to bad (pseudo)metal... It's like me comparing "Lil" Wayne to someone like Metallica or AC/DC.

Dear god yes.

That sounded like a cow stuck in a wood chipper with classical music playing in the background.

I be trippin'.

I prefer rap, I've never really heard a subgenre of metal that I actually liked.

I listen to alternative hip hop and then whatever the hell Tyler/OF is.

  • 12.18.2012 10:02 AM PDT

I'd say metal definitely generally takes more talent than rap. But I'm very biased, since I love metal and don't care for rap.

  • 12.18.2012 10:03 AM PDT

Well I don't listen to much rap and there's so many different kinds of metal (symphonic metal being my favourite) which can take lots of talent to do well. Though good rap can take talent too.

Overall my personal preference is metal. Though I don't like any of the heavy growling stuff.

I like both. But the one that takes more talent is obviously the one in which you have to play an actual instrument. Metal.

Being lyrically talented is not something to take for granted either.

Did you know that 93% of all statistics on the internet are made up on the spot, and that 68% of readers believe them?

Between the Buried and Me is the single most incredibly technically skilled group of five musicians I have personally ever witnessed.

I've been playing guitar, mostly metal, for over 14 years and I can say with certainty that there are plenty of other extremely talented bands out there, some with maybe even more individual skill than BTBAM, but as a team, collectively, nobody touches them.

They're in a league all their own. So if they have that kind of respect and objective ability and skill, not to mention originality and creativity...then who would be their equal in the world of hip hop? Nobody that's alive, that's for sure.
