Subject: 3 Ways schools can protect your kids

1. Waste of time
2. Waste of money
3. Invasion of privacy/overreaction

I think that metal detectors, along with actual campus security officers isn't a bad pairing. You're not going to make schools 100% safe from stuff like this, but these are fairly reasonable ways to address a bulk of the scenarios that lead to campus shootings.

The issue, of course, is budget. Whether it is a "waste" of money or not, security isn't cheap and public schools aren't exactly known for their budget flexibility.
Good point.

It's been ages since I was in public school, but we always had an on-site officer. They always drove bad-ass cars that said "this vehicle was confiscated be drug dealers" on the side. I just assumed every school did.

3 ways to protect.

Better parenting
Better teachers that pay attention
Spreading the word of god (not trying to get into religious politics here).
Why spread the word of God?

Because regardless if you believe in God or not, you cannot deny that faith being part of a family plays a very important moral and support foundation.

I don;t want to get into a religious discussion though. i was was just responding to your comment.

Yes, lets totally ignore the moral implications of extremist and fundamentalist fanatics.
That's not the implication he had with his comment and your comment is now bordering on slander and religious debate, which is a bannable offence. Trust me.

Forcing moral agendas via religion will not have an affect, there are better ways to deal with it.

And stop trying to police forums, the statement was to illustrate that religion causes just the same amount of issues and or violence if not more so, than good things.

I think that we should have armed security guards at schools. I know it seems a bit extreme to see a guy with a gun at the school gates but honestly, I think the time may come

1. Really not saying anything. Being busybodies isn't going to prevent someone from shooting them.
2. Complete waste of money. Metal detectors don't magically stop people from just shooting everyone.
3. Decent advice, but speaks to larger problems, like crappy attitudes towards mental health treatment.

The easiest and most effective thing is to just allow concealed carry on school grounds. Even if it's only for permanent faculty, armed resistance is the most effective counter for these types of gunmen.

Concealed carry for whom exactly?
Utah already allows it for anyone; for less extreme solutions, I said just for permanent faculty, because that's the most invested and responsible group of people on school grounds.

It does seem logical to give faculty firearms, however I think armed security should be enough.
Except not every school has armed security, or enough of them. And hiring additional security is expensive; simply allowing faculty to carry (maybe with some additonal paperwork or evaluations) would be far cheaper, and thus I believe more appealing to taxpayers.

I don't think a metal detector is really necessary in my child's elementary school.

There's always a police officer parked outside of the school at all times. There's always a security officer inside the building at all times. The doors are always locked (you can go out no one can get in) unless of course you're buzzed in, they're also bullet proof. Plus, they have safety procedures in place which are practiced routinely.

My daughter's school is pretty safe.

Wow. Is she enrolled at a private school by chance? My experience is somewhat limited having grown up in Hawaii, but public schools here are nearly completely open and campus security consists of low-paid, out of shape men and women who generally spend more time checking out/goofing off with the students.

I'm not trying to police the forum you -blam!- bullet, I'm giving you a heads up that what you're saying can get you banned. Neither the person who made the "God" comment nor I wanted a religious debate, which is essentially what you are single handedly trying to do. I am Buddhist-Atheist, but I don't give a -blam!- one way or another as long as we can all at least abide by the peaceful nature of what we've been taught and just think for ourselves. It's not hard to not try and impose your views and beliefs on others. If you really want to make your opinion on religion heard, don't do it here. Vent on /b/ or somewhere where people give a -blam!-.

So?

It's just a statement about how irresponsible she was in her past and how her daughter is a product of uncivilized people who lacked culture. No big deal.

And a permanent ban is incoming.

  • 12.18.2012 8:40 AM PDT

None of the schools I've attended had any form of security. After a fatal stabbing at my high school security cameras were introduced, but nothing else.

Public school, actually. I love the school system she's in, it's going to suck when we move.

Wow, bravo to that school then. It would be nice if all schools had the initiative (and the budget) to do something similar.

Armed security was a suggestion. I think this thread is all about suggestions. Also, sure hiring extra security costs, but so does arming the entire faculty. You'll have to pay for the weapons and training. I don't see that being cheaper.
Well, no.

They'd have to pay for the gun and training themselves, just like every other CCW permit holder. If the teachers work in a high risk area where they really need it but can't afford, then I think some sort of voucher system or something could be implemented. Regardless, paying for a few handguns and training classes is still far cheaper than paying the yearly salaries of just a handful of new guards.

It's not just her school, it's the entire school district. All of the schools in this district are pretty secure.

A teacher that has that kind of anger-management issue would have been a problem and been fired beforehand.

And you could easily just mandate that teachers who concealed carry on school grounds have to pass additional certifications or psych evaluations.
