Subject: Was CoD the fall of competitive FPS gaming?

I was pondering the other day why fps as a whole are losing their edge and becoming mediocre. Then I came to me, and I didn't see much else about it on this forum:

Could this be because of CoD?

As far as I know CoD was the start of the whiny 7 year old's playing games meant for a more adult audience. It seems that from CoD 4 that these games have had big under-age followings, and are huge reason for their popularity. Seeing that CoD is a best-seller it was only time until games saw this gold mine Activision had struck and soon followed suit.

They would come out with phases like the all too familiar: "We want this to be accessible for old and new players." which translates: "We want to broaden the target audience (to even lower than what the rating is on the cover) so we can get more money, just like the CoD franchise.".

So you guys, I know I most probably am missing out a few things or have overlooked stuff as well but I would like to know what you think on the matter.

Yes. See Halo 4 for reference.

So, you want to hear a story eh? One about treasure hunters? Have I got a story for you!

1st RULE: You do not talk about CoD CLUB.
2nd RULE: You DO NOT talk about CoD CLUB.
3rd RULE: If someone says "stop" or goes limp, disconnects out the game, it's over.
4th RULE: Only two guys to play.
5th RULE: One game at a time.
6th RULE: No shirts, no shoes.
7th RULE: Games will go on as long as they have to.
8th RULE: If this is your first night at CoD CLUB, you HAVE to play.

Hate to break it to you but I think you'll find it was Halo 3 that got the masses involved with online gaming, and that came out before CoD was popularised.

>implying seven-year-olds weren't playing GTA on the PS1 or PC when they shouldn't have been in the '90s. (That was to the OP.)

Besides, Halo 2 popularised online console FPSs, before that it was Quake, Unreal and Counter-Strike that were huge on the PC, and I doubt many seven-year-olds know how to build and maintain a gaming PC now, let alone then.

OP what are you talking about? The better CoD player always comes on top of the scoreboards in every match.

Don't LOL if you aren't L'inOL.

Halo: Reach
Halo 3
Halo ODST

No, I don't think so.

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

Personally i'd love to see a static, non-biased definition of what competitive FPS gaming is. Games are typically as competitive as the players make them, you really can't argue that, so I get a kick out of the whole "competitive" vs "casual" thing when it comes to FPS games.

I can't even bare to play Halo, CoD, BF anymore. Everyone is being accused of copying ideas and slinging dirt at each other. Online the servers are being swarmed with underage players with silly accents who yell at others to "properly play the game", when they actually suck themselves.

Online gaming is being drained of all fun these days with so many tryhards and whiners complaining and the producers catering to them by constantly dumbing down the games. The campaign, which used to be an equal selling plot to the multiplayer a while back, now just serves as stiffly made tutorial.

It's quite endearing.

Agreed. All the changes are good and add variety. Do we really want another Halo 3? Just running around with one gun and no armor abilities? It's good that 343 wants to try something new. Do we really want the same thing for three more games?

No.
It's the games that strive to be like CoD.

Halo was.

inb4hatewars.

Games like Unreal and Quake used to rule the FPS genre before Halo slowed things down and simplified it with large hitboxes, auto-aim and such.

Listen I'm not debating when the first kid ever picked up an adult game. What I'm saying when was it when these kids started to have an effect on how games were being made?

If good looks could kill, I'd be a weapon of mass destruction.

Q: Hey, what did Hitler say to the black jew?
A: Get to the back of the oven.

As much as I love COD, yes it is. Mostly because of ranking (rewarding the losers almost as much as the winners)but the gameplay elements as well (loadouts are not necessarily "un-competitive" at heart, but given that they can be varied so deeply that no one is on the same level, they really do take away the fair competitive edge in favor of customization).

COD may not have been the first to use these elements, but it certainly popularized them beyond anything that came before it, and now quite a few major competitive games are leaning towards the customization route in sacrifice of the fair competitive elements as a result.

Granted, there are and still can and will be competetive games, but they are now in the minority as COD and the major franchises that emulate its elements are the majority.
