I've found that recent games have become more and more stagnant and similar to each other, COD-like basically, and not many games are breaking newground, and indie games are currently the most innovative area of gaming in terms of gameplay and stories (just look at games such as minecraft).

All these stagnating mainstream games reminds me of a time where gaming crashed and failed. With the new wii u releasing with new consoles coming soon, you'd expect gaming to accelerate, however developers now will most likely try to avoid any extreme innovation for fear of losing money; well at least those on EA's or Activisions leash.

So is there a chance that another gaming crash might occur in the next decade or so? And if so how would that impact us as gamers?

I like Cheese

Gaming is too mainstream and too big to have another video game crash.

I don't think there's going to be a crash.

Indie Gaming is your friend.

In the near future? no.

In the far future? yes.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

I don't think there will be. If there is, it will be because to many of the big publishers aren't that good in business matters as they should be. Both Activision and EA seem to lurch from one bad financial state to another.

I suppose it's possible, however, unlikely. People are entertained by the "new thing", even if the new thing is exactly what it was last time. That's why sequels are so big right now: Halo 4, CoD-- what is it, 7 or 8?--, Madden 2013, GOW-- referring to both Gears and God of War.
Meanwhile, groundbreaking games like Dishonored seem to be getting shat on by people.

We resist change; it's a pattern seen throughout history. I don't think the gaming industry will fail, I think it will become so stagnant that groups of people will drift away, but it will stay strong as a whole

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

I doubt crash, but I could see a shift happening relatively easily. There are some big issues that stand to cause a major change in how games are made/marketed.

Gamers demand new IPs, yet rarely support them with purchases.

Gamers demand high end graphics and tons of content, yet expect them on the cheap and either buy second hand or during sales.

Devs/Publishers often follow the money, there is more money/less risk invovled in sticking to a formula that sells or putting together a dinky mobile game than investing in starting up a new AAA IP.

As time goes guy, if gamers don't get over themselves and more and more devs/publishers fall in line then I see big budget gaming slowing down in favor of mobile and F2P games.

It's currently COD 9, going to be the denary year next year for cod.
Yet surely the stagnation of games, which is certainly happening, will effect a fair amount of people in the gaming crowd. Eventually people will start to leave- some day cod will get old then what happens, the juggernaught falls and nobody is left to pitch an idea that could bring in more sales.
