Subject: A solution to the school shootings

I created a thread awhile ago, and it seems that now is a perfectly relevant time to rehash it with the recent events and all.

Verbatim from the original thread.

So I was talking with a friend earlier about school shootings. He not being american thought it was extremely common here, and that everyone literally carried guns around like cowboys. So we decided that we would try to find a solution. Well here it is.

Lets arm and train every teacher in the public school system.

Think about it, whenever there is a shooting everything happens well before the cops can respond. Teachers are always there. We could even have a program for retired soldiers to be trained to be teachers. Sooo many possibilities.

What do you think flood?

Next addressing finding the students with the issue is worse. Being that it requires more manpower, training, and is less cost effective, i don't think it is viable.

Discuss flood, also a linky to the original Thread

Country: United States.
State: Pennsylvania.
County: Warren.
I graduated from high school on June-11-2011. I'm 19 right now. I'm turning 20 in December. I like playing video games, and board games. I like reading Sci-Fi, and World War II novels, and what not.

"There is nothing better in the world than being better at a video game than someone else....oh wait"

It will cost a lot, but I think it would be a lot more effective if all schools have:
-Bars on the windows.
-Bullet proof glass.
-Metal detectors.
-Security guards around the entrances.
-The doors are locked at all times. If you are a visitor you have to enter a room which is locked out from the school. This room will have some type of device that's like the X rays at an airport.

The whole armed retired soldier teacher thing sounds good. But to me it would be more effective if you do things that prevent people from taking weapons into the building. And prevent people from getting inside the building.

How about instead of turning our attention to guns we stop treating the symptoms and have a real conversation.

But that won't happen. Asking ourselves "what is it about our society that drives people nuts?" or "Why is it that Americans want so badly to go out and murder one another?" is to uncomfortable to talk about.

So we'll just keep spewing garbage about banning "assault weapons" even though "assault weapons" is a term invented by the media and owning a fully automatic weapon is already illegal in the U.S.

We'll ignore the fact that the vast majority of all gun violence in the U.S. is gang related and committed with pistols.

P.S. if you live in America and advocate for banning pistols, then you have a critical misunderstanding of the society in which you live.

But to answer your point, that is a terrible idea. Teachers lose their cool all the time. Just go to youtube and look up teachers freaking out. Now imagine if they had a gun.

Any concrete suggestions as to how we tackle the underlying problem? No? Then I guess we should bring in the security guards.

Now that you brought that up it does sound like a prison. When I was typing that I didn't even think of one.

Do you know what a prison is? Obviously not.

I believe he did.

What a novel idea. Let's get kids used to a prison atmosphere. That will probably bring crime rates down (sarcasm)

"I don't mean to sound bitter, cold or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out"
- Bill Hicks

All well and good until a teacher snaps and uses the gun given to him by the school to pop a cap in that really annoying pupil who's been winding him up all year.

Also, only Americans would propose "moar gunz!" as a solution to shootings :)

Though I would be for this, I think the better way to handle it would be to address our mental health system. Its currently broken and needs upgrading.

The country that can send men to the moon, yet can't keep its schools safe without armed guards.

If anything, up in security would just be the best.

Thats it.

Please do not send me group invites.

Arming teachers isn't going to stop shootings, it'll only result in fewer dead children and adults.

This is not a solution.

There are a lot of prisons with less security than this.

You're also talking about billions of dollars worth of technology and retrofits and new buildings.

Compare that to simply allowing licenced teachers to concealed carry.

I have no problem coming up with hypothetical solutions to the underlying issue here. However, I'm just a guy on a message board. I'm not a policy maker that gets to go on national television and spread my message and my ideas. These same policy makers routinely duck the conversation in order to talk about "gun control" which is a proven hot button issue that translates into votes.

Nothing is going to stop shootings entirely. But arming teachers or at least having more security would certainly lower the amount of them.

  • 12.18.2012 9:19 AM PDT

Massacres can happen anywhere and not just schools. It has to be a lot harder to get a gun and really examine the people who try to buy a gun.

This world wants to drag you down... And the weight, that guilt they want to hang around your neck, you don’t have to carry it one more step. You think they won’t let you rest, but it’s not up to them. It never was.

Isn't there a way to prevent mentally unstable people from purchasing guns? Might save a bit more effort than training and arming teachers, no?

It would be doing something more productive than what that military budget is doing right now. Just take what ever amount you need out of that. The problem about licensed teachers is that the person is already inside the building. By that time they could have already killed/shot someone. Those guards are already at the doors. Those teachers aren't.

The licensed teacher thing is a good idea, but preventing the person from entering the building with a weapon is even better. They can't cause any damge to the people in the building if they can't get in it or shoot through it.

Fewer deaths sounds like a great improvement until we can change the more fundamental problems that underly these shootings.
