I've always had my reservations about this...Are they people actually getting the tip and are they told they got a tip?

I'd hate it if they where unaware completely.

They physically enter the value into the register, so... yes.

A lot of places distribute the tips. So in your case, they may do that.

I hope so.

Probably 99% of restaurants distribute tips.

But as for being aware, as said a lot of waitresses enter the value themselves, or at the very least look at it when taking it up for someone else to enter.

You can take "distribution" two ways.

Most restaurants distribute the tip you give between your waiter/waitress, the hostess, the busboys, and if applicable, the bar staff. So you are still somewhat directly tipping your experience.

But to take it further, some restaurants take it the entire way - all tip money enters a common pool and each group takes a certain percentage and splits it evenly. Waiters get 50% of all tips, busboys get 15%, etc. and everyone in each group shares evenly.

Oh, you think darkness is your ally. You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was already a man. By then, it was nothing to me but BLINDING!

And, yes, I feel awkward if they don't explicitly see me leaving a tip.

In all the restaurants I've ever worked out, some big names including Texas Road House and Outback Steak House. You get your tips at the end of the night, minus 3% which goes into a pool that gets distributed between the hosts, bussers, and food runners.

In the case of the credit cards, if you got nothing but credit card tips all night, when you "cash out" at the end of the night (you go over your totals, receipts, etc) you are given the cash from the manager.

In the case of getting nothing but cash tips, you go over your receipts, add up your total sales and give the cash amount to the manager, what ever is left over is your tip out.

And then you mix the two because more often than not you get both cash and credit card tips. You're expose to keep cash and card receipts separate.

The 3% for the "pool" is taken out of the tip out, not the total sales.
