Definition for use in this thread: the concept that an ever-expanding consumption of goods is advantageous to the economy.

So, it is the idea that the path to prosperity and a better life is the constant purchasing of goods. For the individual, you are expected to jump at every sale, lust after every new gadget, and no matter what be constantly spending money.

This, at least in the States, is the norm. What are your thoughts on it?

Nahman Jayden, Eff bee eye. I herd that you're the origammy killah...

It's become, like you said, the norm in the states. Honestly, there is very little to e done about it, and i believe it will continue in the future.

If you had an electron microscope, you still couldn't find the -blam!- I don't give.

It's a brilliantly vicious cycle. The producer sells it, the consumer gives the producer money, the producer expands, producer sell more...

You should have waited for the other thread to be locked.

"If you want to test a man's character, give him power" -- Abraham Lincoln

I dont think its advantageous for the reason that in order for an economy to grow significantly long term its best to spend more on investment than consumption.

This doesn't always happen. There is a well documented effect of over consumption where teh quality of goods go down over time, and eventually the producer gets abandoned for the higher quality good. It is being argued right now if this is what is happening to Apple with the iPhone.

there's no going back from it now, our society is built on it.

You are confusing Capitalism with Consumerism.

The two are very different.

Of course the entire definition of investment is foregoing consumption today on the expectation of being able to consume more at a later date.

So, still consumption driven.

Then the cycle begins anew, with the better product until its quality goes down, this is why too big to fail companies NEED to fail.

No I think, I just I just phrased it wrong. I mean that the society is very materialistic, they're often looking foward to payday, not to feed themselves, but to buy that thing they've had their eye on for a while. It's been like that for a long time and it'd unlikely that people will want that to change.

That's just capitalism. Capitalism dictates that if you need a pair of pants, you go out and buy them, according to your specifications and budget. Consumerism says that you need to buy this season's jeans because they are new, and new is better.

It's a bad idea and one that won't last. When we finally become civilized, and our great great great ad nauseum grandchildren look back on old political and economic doctrines in history classes, I'm sure it'll generate a few laughs.

Consumerism is the reason why people are always in debt.
