Thomas Jefferson in particular believed that having a standing army in times of peace was not necessary.

Although when was the last time we really had a "time of peace"?

Any country/group that has anything worth needs some form of protection. A better question is does the US need such a bloated military, a question that has already been address with the upcomming DOD budget cuts.

By directing so much of our resources to our military, we're actually making ourselves weaker and more vulnerable because those resources could be directed elsewhere.
