If so, then how much would it cost to do so?

I always thought that AGP was way over PCI Express. Well, I guess I that guy who spent 4 years in collage studying computer science doesn't know anything.

Ah yes, I forgot. Thanks a ton, I'm going to save money for a new motherboard. I should upgrade to PCI-Express when my birthday comes again on July 4, 2007 next year.

Trekkie it goes PCI-e>AGP>PCI. AGP and PCI-e, from what I've heard, are about equal right now but soon PCI-e will be kicking AGP ass because they have more potential to be awesome...

Right, because PCI-E also supports sound cards, capture cards, and physics cards such as Ageia's PhysX accelerator.

You will need to get a whole new motherboard.

My mobo supports PCI-E x16 and it cost $100.

Hooray! Only $100!

By the time I'm done saving up money by July 4th next year I'm going to have more than enough money for PCI-E, games, and maybe a new GPU.

AGP means Advanced Graphics Port. It doesn't work with sound cards because its designed to get maximum performance from video cards. I have a PCI-E on my old computer that is 10 years old, and that computer doesn't support a sound card.

Solder it on like i did. I put an AGP connector to my Dell 3000 cheap mobo which didnt have one to begin with.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

accelerated graphics port...not advanced

AGP runs @66mhz, PCIe runs@100mhz. There is very little performance difference at this point. The problem with AGP is that the top end graphics cards are only made for PCI-e now.

If you buy a PCI Express mobo, then you will almost certainly need to buy a new GPU at the same time. Most PCI-E boards don't have AGP slots. The ones that I've seen that do all have some weird AGP slot that is incompatible with most popular AGP cards.

Of course, if you're getting a PCI-E board, then what would be the point in using your old AGP card in it?

Exactly. I'm getting a PCI-E board to get better GPUs, obviously.

No you don't. PCI-E wasn't around back then.

It went like this: PCI->AGP->PCI-E.

sort of....

In terms of AGP vs. PCI-E, PCI-E is not better because of its extra potential, but because it is just faster. when you compare the two, you can only compare PCI-E x16 to AGP. PCI-E x16 is for video, while PCI-E 4x and 1x don't really have much use yet, although future devices (sound card/physics card) will likely head down that path. although i doubt that the ageia card will survive long, because nVidia is planning to implement physics chips onto their graphics boards so that its all together.

Kim, I would wait to look at motherboards now because once conroe comes out and the newer socket AM2 AMD cards come out you will probably want to just upgrade both your mobo and your proc together.

O RLY?

When will conroe come out anyways? I'm not planning to make the change to PCI-E until my birthday comes next year anyways, so it's all good. Also, I've got a pretty decent processor: Intel Pentium IV with 3.20 GHz.
