Semi-autos are much more lethal than automatic weapons, I would much rather get shot at with an automatic. I know that wasn't directly relevant to what OP posted, but oh well.
Really? So between having one bullet shot at you or 10 identical bullets being shot at you, you'd rather the automatic weapon?
I would much rather fight a person wielding an automatic weapon. Please, educate yourself.

~Thread-killer~

They already are. I'm sitting here at work and our .223 ammunition is dwindling fast. We sold our last semi-auto .223 rifle earlier today. We've sold over 20 of them since Friday.

It matters to the media. They need to get the facts straight. They use the term Assault Rifle to conform to the message they want to send. They do this all the freaking time.

Also I've read sources that say he left the .223 in the back of his car while he kiled with the Glock and Sig Sauer.
I thought that was a shotgun?

When someone uses automatic fire, they aren't aiming to kill, they're using suppressive fire.

Does it matter what he used? He still killed inocent people.

It matters if a certain party is trying to get assault weapons banned even more than they already are based on the emotional response from this event where an assault weapon wasn't even used.

quick question, why do we need assault weapons (specifically designed [just like all non hunting rifles] to kill people incredibly quickly) in the first place?

if its for sport than its the people who think that guns are just a game that are the real cause for these weapons to be accessible to people so easily.

Why would I need an SUV when they kill so many more people than sedans? Why would I need a Ferrari when they're just made to go much faster than the speed limit allows? Why would I need the internet when I could use the library and phones? Why would I need a smart phone instead of landlines and payphones? Why would I need lobster when I can eat spam? Why would I live in a 2500 sq ft house in the suburbs when I can live in a 220 sq ft apartment complex?

Why do I need to justify owning something constitutionally guaranteed to me?

And how is an "assault weapon" any more lethal than any semi-automatic hunting firearm?

because one of those constitutionally guaranteed items is SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO KILL PEOPLE

guns are no game as you seem to think.
and are you daft? is a weapon that can kill more targets in quick succession not more lethal than one designed to kill 1 at a time?

The main rifles used are the M16 (Marines) and M4 (Army). The M16 is capable of fully automatic fire, the M4 is semiautomatic or 3-round burst.

This a partial list of assault weapons on the 2007 Federal Assault Weapons ban.

I think we can agree that many, but not all, of the "assault weapons" listed would also classify as an "assault rifle".

because most ordinary hunting rifles are not built for quick reloading. Any mad gunman would most likely be killed before he could reload the gun a second time.

and fine, if you want to split hairs than let me get down to the nitty goddamn gritty. No american should have access to an automatic firearm. Deny them the ability to kill multiple targets per pull of the trigger. This doesnt stop the problem but goddammit it slows down the body count.

I know it was never passed, but why would they even ban a firearm with such history? The thing got our men through World War 2 and Korea.

However the round used is virtually identical to a 5.56 NATO... which is an assault rifle round.

Source.

That doesnt matter,in comparison to other rifle calibers .223(5.56) is a small bullet so the entire hype about assault weapons( which arent even really assault weapons) is based on just the fact that its a "big scary black gun".

These are all magazine fed semi-automatic hunting rifles that could be quickly reloaded.

Also, only 2 registered fully automatic firearms have occurred in the US over the last 75 years. And none of the recent shootings (read, last 15 years or so) have used fully automatic firearms, so no, your second point is moot.

My band and artist networking/information site. Check it out!

I mean you can get killed by a .22. And you can live after getting shot with a .45. You're shooting a metal projectile at high FPS levels...It's placement more than anything and the actual bullet make up rather the caliber size.

Someone started a facebook group about banning Assault Rifles. I'm debating whether or not to tell them that they already are banned (in most states, at least).

Actually, real assault rifles are only banned in 15 states, but they're prohibitively expensive for most people to own (think tens of thousands of dollars).

Yes, considering that politicians are going into a frenzy, proposing all kinds of bans for a type of weapon that he didn't use and is already incredibly difficult to get ahold of.
