Cons: You could screw up your phone

I actually tried rooting it and screwed my phone up. I had to get a new one.

It is REALLY hard to brick your phone from rooting. Even if you screw up your flashing, it's really easy to flash it back to stock.

Pretty much. As long as you make a Nandroid back up of your stock firmware before attempting the root/flash of a custom ROM, you'll be fine.
