Lol

I really can't fathom how SC II is remotely considered a success since early January. When you go to Team Liquid everyone seems to be in complete denial of how dead the game is becoming. Twitch.tv barely have any numbers for SC II except when a major tournament happens. The population that actually plays the game is so low that it makes H4 population looks like heaven. Yet, I constantly see people bring up on the flood forums how "awesome" SC II is and how being all competitive is how games should be.
Seriously stop with all the topics of how H4 or any game should be like SC II when its obvious that the game is a complete failure both population wise and even competitively wise. Since LoL became top dog, SC II barely has any power left in the E-sports scene. Literally the game died two years after it was made.

I make a living of selling my body, and I don't mean sex.

That's like, just your opinion man.

Population so low?

Dude, its one of the most played PC games of all time. At a major competition here in the USA, 150,000 people attended to watch the final games.

I'm not talking about spectators. I'm talking about actual players playing the game. Not people who just watch other people play.

It's a tough game...games that take more skill and practice always have lower populations.

Tell that to all of South Korea.

Like for instance, I played the original Starcraft about last week and there was 10,000 people playing it. The game has been out for 14 years and that's pretty impressive.

Starcraft 2 still is one of the most played games on PC right now because the options and game modes the game delivers will keep you playing for years like the original Starcraft.

No, it's not popular in South Korea. Hell, even Destiny an ex SC II streamer said. "SC II isn't even in the top 20 played games in South Korean Internet Cafes".

Okay, explain to me why Starcraft 2 is number 2 on this list?

  • 12.18.2012 5:38 PM PDT

Lol

That list doesn't represent population. sc2ranks.com does. And according to it only around 70k have played within the last seven days. That's 40k less than H4's. SC II pros are retiring left and right and moving to LoL. Or do you ever visit Teamliquid?

That's the sequel to a game that came out years ago. When we say 'SC2' we mean 'SC2:Wings of Liberty' since that is the game that is out now. It (HoTS) isn't even coming out in 2012. I agree that the majority of the SC2 population isn't that great to play with. If you think DMR/boltshot is annoying, enjoy 4gates and ling all ins in SC2.

And HoTS does not look that promising either. What do you do against protoss? If you drop, they purify the nexus and your drop is dead. If you hit them when their army is out of position, they just recall to their base. Against zerg, you can't really build any AOE/expensive units because you can just viper them into a group of hydras, which have become the best unit. Anything else can just be blinded with blinding cloud. Viper is the most imba thing ever. Terran didn't really get anything to encourage them to build something other than MMM, which is still their strongest option.

Balance is somewhat a problem, but the all in builds that you can ride all the way into master's before you have to learn how to actually play the game are where the community and developer have fallen flat on their face. Yes, you can beat a 4gate. But yes, it still works so often that you can watch a streamer go from diamond to master's with just '4gate into dt.'

Currently tier 3 terran tech is not worth getting at all. Battlecruisers, which are supposed to be the terran capital ship are out DPS'd by 6 marines and 1 medivac. Thor are slow, and are even countered by mutalisks, the unit they are supposed to assist against. Again, marines and medivacs are a better investment than thors.

Signatures are for little kids.

Any video game that actually has people watching it at a high level isn't a failure to me.

Not that I'd care anyway if it was a failure.

  • 12.18.2012 6:03 PM PDT

The game came out in 2010 and clearly they don't have the same plan for it as they did for Starcraft 1.

I still only play Starcraft 1 though so I don't really know, just because the population is low now doesn't mean much.

Too bad the game is balanced around esports and not around the people and how the game is typically played, which is why people enjoy watching it more than they enjoy playing it. Plus the pro players typically go for much more elaborate and "fun" games than for the cheesiest path to get a victory. Which is ironic, considering they are playing for major money and people on the ladder are playing to inflate their epeen.

Typical ladder game:

Open up zerg(random), terran(random) goes 1 base hellion/banshee. First hellions do 0 damage, he follows up with 4 more instead of grabbing an expansion, because why not. I'm on 3 base at the time his first banshee hits my main, I have a queen and a spore crawler, it starts killing some drones. I nydus his base with ling+roach, and it's gg. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Zerg (random) vs Protoss. Open hatch before pool, scout that he hasn't walled his ramp. Assume proxy 2 gate, rush to speedlings. Get speedlings over to his natural, no buildings. Run speedlings up the ramp just as a 2 warp cycle 4gate hits my natural. Lose the natural, put spines in the main. Lings in his base kill all his probes, I hold the army back home, gg. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
